What do you do after a fire?

5/25/2022 (Permalink)

House fires can often be difficult, potentially devastating events for any family on both a financial and emotional level. After such an emotional event, it can be difficult to know the next steps to take. If you ever find yourself in this difficult situation, having these concerns in mind can steer you in the right direction.

Pressing Concerns

First, consider if your safety is threatened by staying in the house. From there, be sure that any activities you undertake won’t put your safety at risk. Take precaution to avoid electrical hazards and potentially dangerous falls, as well as making sure to be careful with wet materials, as these can be surprisingly heavy.

These are just a handful of the actions you need to take after a fire. The most important decision is to call a SERVPRO professional who will make sure everything is done efficiently. Call (941) 792-7715

 now.

Actions to Take Following a Fire

After a fire, there are a number of measures you should take to limit fire damage. First you should do your best to keep your space clean, by using petroleum jelly or oil to clean and protect chrome, cleaning houseplants (making sure to get both sides of their leaves), avoiding excessive movement while in your home to prevent spreading soot, and washing your hands to prevent getting furniture and walls dirty. With this done, your next moves should entail changing your HVAC filter, covering carpets and furniture with towels or linens, covering air registers with cheesecloth, and finally, emptying and opening your fridge and freezer while the electricity is turned off.

Actions to Avoid Following a Fire

Some actions following a fire may leave you worse off, rather than helping you. One crucial mistake to avoid is not seeking help from the right professionals. Cleaning electrical appliances  which have been exposed to fire, heat, or water should be done by a repair service. Cleaning walls, carpet, or furniture should be left to a restoration service like SERVPRO. Connect with us at (941) 792-7715.

Even clothing needs to be cared for carefully, as sending your clothes to a regular dry cleaner, may cause the smoke stench to stay. Aside from taking on actions which require professional help, it is also important to avoid ingesting packaged food or beverages which were stored near fire, heat, or water, as well as turning on ceiling fixtures with a wet ceiling.

Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned

As lockdowns come to an end and mask mandates are lifted, cleanliness has remained at the forefront of the minds of many consumers, who are more conscious of this than ever before as they enter establishments in their communities. The pandemic has redefined what it means to be clean. As we adapt to a new normal, it is important for businesses to make customers feel safe. If you are a business owner who is looking to ensure the health of your community, consider utilizing the new Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned defensive pathogen cleaning program.

With decades of experience in biochemical spill remediation and decontamination, SERVPRO has created this program without regard to the constraints of standard janitorial practices. Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned goes beyond conventional cleaning practices, employing proactive viral pathogen cleaning

The core of the program can be summarized in a simple three Cs: Consult, Clean, Certify. When SERVPRO is carrying out its commercial services, it recognizes that each business has its own unique needs. Rather than replicating a standardized process for all businesses, in following with the first C, “consult,” SERVPRO will tailor the program to address the needs of each facility individually. The next C, “clean,” describes the deep clean which can be expected when this program is carried out by SERVPRO Franchise Professionals. Utilizing its proprietary Hospital-Grade cleaning methods which follow CDC decontamination standards, SERVPRO ensures successful cleaning. The final C, “certify,” gives businesses the opportunity to call attention to their work with SERVPRO.

Any business which has been Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned will have the program’s shield placed on their front window. This will signal to members of your community that when they enter your establishment, they can rest assured that they are in a space which cares for the safety of all who enter.

Commercial Fire Damage Restoration in Bradenton

5/10/2022 (Permalink)

Fires have the power to devastate homes and lives, but what we rarely acknowledge is that they also have the strength to destroy commercial properties just as effectively. If a fire breaks out in your business, you will not only be dealing with the catastrophic damages to your building and equipment, but also smoke damage from the fire. That’s not even to mention the water damage caused by the firefighters as they scramble to douse the flames.

When business owners find themselves in a situation where their property is destroyed by fire, they have two options: hire commercial fire damage restoration specialists, or restore the business by themselves.

Need commercial fire damage restoration now? Call us at (941) 792-7715

Protect your commercial property from fire

Fire damage costs business owners more than $2.4 billion dollars each year. That does not include the amount of capital lost during the restoration process. Easing the financial burden through effective methods will give individuals and businesses the flexibility necessary for a flawless fixup.

Before we dive into what is important to have and keep in mind, we should first give you steps you can take in order to maximize the fire security in your commercial building.

Install and update fire detectors: This may seem to be the most obvious of preventative steps, but over 50% of large fires happen in facilities with malfunctional and/or absent fire detectors.

Get accessible fire extinguishers: Make sure there are fire extinguishers easily accessible to any given space in a facility.

Maintain cleanliness in cooking areas: A huge chunk of fires will happen in poorly cleaned greasy areas. Take the time to rid the areas of any potential fire hazards.

Fix and update electrical fixtures: Do not overload the circuitry! Old or damaged fixtures must be replaced.

Taking these four steps alone will significantly reduce the chance of a fire.

Connect with a professional

Now, on the off chance you find yourself with fire damage, call a professional! Commercial fire damage is a big job that should never be done by an amateur. Professionals will be able to assess the damage and provide you with a quote. Do not wait until the problem gets any worse. You will save time and money by following these steps.

How We Respond to Fire Damage

When you experience a fire, firefighters will race to the scene to take it out. However, this leaves extensive water damage, not to mention the fire and smoke damage from the initial emergency. Our SERVPRO professionals are specially trained to restore your home to pre-fire condition – "Like it never even happened."

Once you call our hotline at (941) 792-7715 and we will send a team with the appropriate equipment and resources to assess the damage. Trained professionals will inspect every corner of your home for fire, smoke, and soot damage.

Since fire damage compromises windows, walls, and roofs, our technicians will board up missing windows and place tarps on damaged roofs. This protects against further damage. Next, specialized equipment is used to clean all restorable items and structures. In the event of nasty odors, SERVPRO technicians can use industrial air scrubbers and fogging equipment to remove them.

From there, it's down to repairs. This can take the form of minor restoration repairs, such as replacing drywall or installing a new carpet. More serious repairs such as reconstruction of certain areas of a property will also be evaluated.

For questions or concerns, call us anytime at 941-792-7715

New Year Cleaning and Decluttering For a Fresh Start

the words "Start Fresh" in orange in front of a gray background, SERVPRO logo, cleaning supplies in foreground Regularly scheduled home-maintenance and cleaning can curb hazardous, pricey problems in the future like fires and mold growth.

Regularly scheduled home-maintenance and cleaning can curb hazardous, pricey problems in the future like fires and mold growth. Since we are entering the new year, decluttering is a great way to improve the usability of your space—so you can freely undertake your big plans for the year.

More than a tidy environment

One of the easiest ways to declutter your mind is to declutter your home. If untidy environments are stressing you out, we suggest starting small. Pick up the general items around your most used spaces. Wash the dishes, fold the laundry, and make the beds. After the basics are cleaned, tackle the details.

Deep clean the kitchen:

  • Check for expiration and toss old food and condiments
  • Wipe out refrigerator drawers, cabinets, the microwave, and oven
  • Get rid of cupboard items you don’t use
  • Empty the junk drawer

Main area cleaning:

  • Dust ceiling fan blades
  • Wash baseboards and walls—especially if you have children!
  • Vacuum underneath furniture

Bedrooms/Closets:

  • Wash curtains and linens
  • Rotate and flip mattress
  • Turn all hangers backwards, then when you wear an item, replace the hanger normally—this indicates which items you wear. Toss or donate backwards hanging items after 1 year.

Bathrooms:

  • Scrub the bathtub walls and don’t forget the shower head
  • Use a drain snake tool or drain liquid to break up stuck hair and scum in sinks and shower

Holiday Purge:

  • For every gift received, get rid of one item
  • Sell or donate décor you didn’t use this season

More technical:

  • Replace air filters every 3 months
  • Check and replace smoke alarm batteries

If you need more in-depth mold, fire, or water damage cleaning, SERVPRO of West Bradenton/Anna Maria is Here To Help®. We understand not every clean up is quick, easy, or preventable. To inquire about our services, call us today at (941) 792-7715.

In the case of water issues, this means water extraction, followed by drying and dehumidification. All restorable items and structures which have been damaged are then cleaned and sanitized. Finally, we close everything off with our restoration process. This process includes:

  • Minor/major repairs

What Should You Do Until We Arrive?

No matter how fast we are (and we’re pretty fast), it’ll still take a bit of time to reach your property. You’ll have a few minutes until we arrive, but that doesn’t mean you have to sit and stress the whole time. We’ve developed a guide for water damage emergency tips.

The simplest thing you can do is start to remove excess water. You can do this by using a mop or some towels. Something else which will be extremely useful is to remove loose items from floors- especially if they’re electronic. Try to keep electronics as far away from the water as possible, but don’t put yourself in danger. Better to have ruined electronics and be safe than for a much worse scenario!

Backed by a national system of over 1,700 franchises, SERVPRO of West Bradenton / Anna Maria can get you the resources you need quickly before a single fire destroys everything you’ve worked hard for.

Fire Damage Tips

To minimize the chances of fire damage, we have brought together some ideas which can help you.

  1. Keep objects away from heaters and fireplaces! Flammable objects like papers and beauty products should stay at least three-feet away from heating equipment.
  2. Set up a carbon monoxide detector. Carbon monoxide is a colorless and odorless gas. Since it can be produced by a number of fuel-burning devices, it's important to have carbon monoxide alarms on every level of your home. This will ensure every person in the home can hear and be alerted to the emergency.
  3. Clean your appliances regularly! Big or small, kitchen appliances ought to be kept in good repair. Grease buildup is a major problem for interior oven walls, your stovetop, and even your exhaust hood. All of these can trigger fires.

When disaster strikes, the last thing that a business owner should worry about is their business falling apart due to mold, or being destroyed because of fire and water damage. SERVPRO of West Bradenton / Anna Maria has two methods of helping commercial properties in the case of such disaster events.

There are two ways that we can help post-disaster: through our Commercial Large Loss program, and our Commercial Restoration Services.

Commercial Large Loss Program

The elite class of our loss specialists are strategically positioned throughout the United States to handle disasters of any size. We’ve worked with:

  • The Hospitality Industry

This strategy has allowed our response teams to help clients through major events, such as the 2005 Katrina, Wilma, and Rita hurricanes. In 2010, we secured companies against the Nashville floods. More recently, we saved many a business make it through the 2017 California wildfires.

Storm damage doesn't have to be stressful

1/4/2022 (Permalink)

A storm generally involves violent winds, hail, and snow. Sometimes, there can be a storm without violent winds, but that is when the rain, hail, or snow are violent enough to be considered a storm. 4 Ways to Avoid a Kitchen Fire

1/4/2022 (Permalink)

Appliances are necessary components of a properly functioning, usable kitchen. We need them to be able to cook and prepare food properly. As with any electrical or gas source, proper care must be taken with these elements in order to prevent a kitchen fire from breaking out.   Here are four key steps you can take to prevent a kitchen fire in your own home:

Clean Your Appliances Regularly

Keeping your kitchen appliances, big and small, clean and in good repair is essential to preventing a kitchen fire. Remove grease buildup from your cooktop, interior oven walls, and exhaust hood (along with its filter). Make sure to empty the crumbs from your toaster on a consistent basis. Replace appliances with frayed cords. If your appliance is not working the way it should be, have it repaired by a certified appliance repair company.

Keep Towels Away from the Cooktop

Fabrics of any sort are fire risks if stored or even placed for a moment too close to the cooktop. Do not leave kitchen towels, pot holders, dish rags, or paper towels beside the cooktop. Even your apron can be flammable. Make sure that when you remove it, you place it far away from the cooktop. If a burner is left on accidently or a towel is left too close to a pan while cooking, these fabrics can quickly ignite and cause a kitchen fire.

Do Not Put Metal in the Microwave

You probably know not to put metal into a microwave. However, knowing can be easier said than done. When you are hurrying to get food warmed up or are on the phone and distracted while trying to get dinner on the table, these are the times that you might forget to remove a foil cover or the metal serving spoon before putting a dish in the microwave. In addition, the takeout containers that contain aluminum might easily slip by and get placed in the microwave. All of these are fire hazards! Always double check what you are putting in the microwave before you turn it on.

Be Careful with Grease

Too much grease in a pan can be extremely dangerous due to grease splattering all over your heat source along with the potential to ignite a grease fire. To avoid this, try to minimize the amount of oil or grease in your pan. Never leave a cooking pan unattended. While this is true for any form of cooking, it is particularly important if you have oil or grease in your pan. If the oil catches fire, you need to react quickly to suffocate the grease fire with a metal lid, baking soda, or salt.

Regardless of how careful you are, accidents can still happen. If you’ve experienced a kitchen fire or fire of any sort in your home, reach out to us here at SERVPRO. We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage. Throughout the process, we will treat your family and property with care, respect, and empathy.

Water Damage? Here’s What to Do.

11/12/2021 (Permalink)

Nearly 25% of homeowners are going to experience water damage in their home at some point. Water damage is one of the most common, and most costly, types of insurance claims for homeowners. So when you find water damage in your home, what can you do? Here are some do it yourself tips to use before you call for help.

Step One: Locate the Water Damage Source

Clearly, finding where the water is coming from is important. This can be tricky depending on the location. For example, ceilings with water damage are difficult to locate the source. In such a case, it’s best to call a professional immediately. Give SERVPRO® of West Bradenton / Anna Maria a call at (941) 792-7715. We are strategically located to respond quickly to your water emergency event, and can help lower the stress of insurance paperwork and processes.

Step Two: Shut Off Your Water and Electricity

If you find the source of your water damage, you may realize that it’s an internal issue (ie a pipe). Shut off your water as fast as you can to reduce any additional damage. Any electronics on the affected area should be removed. If they are too heavy or too numerous to move, turn off the electricity completely.

Step Three: Remove As Much As You Can

Once you have turned off the water and electricity, you should try to remove as many of your personal items as you can. Water damage on some items may cause them to be unsalvageable. Since heavy furniture may be difficult or impossible to move, you may qualify for a deductible with any resulting insurance claims.

What The Pros Do About Water Damage

What To Do After a Fire

8/23/2021 (Permalink)

After a fire breaks out in your home, you might feel lost and unsure how to proceed. It can be extremely overwhelming to deal with post-fire damage. Insurance companies, fire departments, city inspectors, mitigation specialists, and contractors will probably all be involved in the process. All of this can leave you feeling a little lost.

However, if a fire does occur in your home, it is important to handle the situation carefully and correctly in order to protect you and your family, your possessions, and your home itself. Here are some things to keep in mind if you find yourself dealing with a house fire:

Do Not Enter Your Home After a Fire

Until the fire inspectors have given you permission to reenter your home, do not go inside the building. The structure of your home could be comprised, and the fire department will need to make sure it is safe for you to reenter. Even if the fire department has deemed your home safe to reenter, you might need to also get permission from your insurance company. Sometimes your insurance claim could be impacted or even denied if you reenter before they have cleared you to do so.

Once you are cleared to reenter the building, keep in mind that soot is extremely irritating to airways and eyes. You should wear protective gear when you step inside the burnt structure. And finally, do not turn on any source of electric, gas, or water until inspectors and the fire department tell you it is okay to do so.

Contact Your Insurance Agent

Regardless of the size of your house fire, it is important to contact your insurance agent as soon as possible. Obviously, you will want to start repairs right away, but your insurance agent will need to be notified before you can begin those repairs. In addition, your insurance agent can help you with the financial ramifications of your house fire. Some policies offer funds to help cover alternative housing, day-to-day expenses, and replacement of personal items due to a fire.

Secure a Place to Stay

After a fire, you will need to find a place to stay. If the damage is minor, you might only need a place for a short amount of time. However, if your home is destroyed or sustained extensive damage, you will need to secure long-term housing for you and your family while you work with your insurance agent, inspectors, and contractors to determine the best course of action.

Review Your Possessions

If you did not sustain a total loss from the fire, you might still have possessions inside the home that are undamaged. Once you are cleared to re-enter the structure, you should plan to remove those items right away to avoid becoming the target of looters. Creating a catalog of your home’s contents with pictures of items prior to or after the fire will help with your insurance claim process. If possible, gather receipts or write down the make, model, and serial numbers of larger items such as appliances or electronics. These records will help make your claim process much smoother.

Fire Damage Restoration

Experiencing a house fire is stressful. Here at SERVPRO, we want to help alleviate a little of that stress for you. Once you have called your insurance agent, make sure your next call is to SERVPRO of West Bradenton/Anna Maria at (941) 792-7715. 5 Causes of Commercial Water Damage

8/23/2021 (Permalink)

Commercial water damage can destroy more than just your physical property. It can also destroy your company’s revenue for a period of time and pose a health risk to customers and employees if the water damage is not handled properly. Mitigating the water damage quickly is critical in order to minimize its impact on your business.

The most common five causes of commercial water damage are:

1. Storm Damage

Severe weather from hurricanes, thunderstorms, and flash floods can cause significant water damage to your property. Before a storm hits, make sure that your building is prepared for possible severe weather. Keeping your gutters cleaned out and free of debris is an extremely important part of being prepared for a potential storm. In addition, it is important that your property has a functioning drainage system to help water drain away from your building.

2. Roof Damage

While high winds or heavy rainfall can cause roof damage, your roof can also be damaged due to improper roof maintenance, such as missing shingles or cracked caulking. If a large tree branch or a tree trunk falls onto your roof, it can cause structural damage as well. At the same time, heavy rooftop equipment—common with commercial buildings—can create entry points for water intrusion due to missing screws, punctures from maintenance tools, and ventilation panels not being 100% waterproof when hard, driving rain occurs.

3. Broken Pipes

Commercial water damage due to broken or damaged pipes is extremely common, unfortunately. Due to the pipes usually being inside walls, floors, or ceilings, it can be difficult to identify the exact issue or even where the leak is occurring within your building. Water damage professionals, such as ourselves here at SERVPRO, can help you find the leak with leak detection tools and equipment. If you notice any signs of water damage with an unknown cause—water stains on walls or ceilings, loose tiles, and musty or moldy smells—call a professional right away in order to keep the damage from spreading even further within your building.

4. Leaking Sprinkler Systems

Like broken or leaking pipes, your building’s sprinkler system can also cause water damage due to leaks. Inspect your system regularly to help avoid potential leaks. By routinely checking your sprinkler system and keeping an eye out for wet carpet or walls, you have a better chance of finding a leaking sprinkler system before it creates bigger problems in your walls or ceilings.

5. Window Damage

Broken windows or windows that are not sealed properly can allow water or moisture to seep into your building. This could be the result of poor installation or a lack of maintenance. It is important to routinely check to make sure that your windows are not cracked and the sealant is still in place and undamaged.

Why Choose SERVPRO of West Bradenton / Anna Maria

Many people clean their homes prior to leaving for the season or for vacation. They also make sure that all the lights are off, and then also check that all windows and doors are locked securely. Many otherwise careful people fail to shut off the water line at the outside of their home during their pre-vacation preparations. Many times, nothing comes of this, but when it does, the water damage can be substantial.

Water damage in Bradenton and Anna Maria can result from a broken water line, no matter where the break or leak is located and can cause damage throughout your home. This damage may not only spread across the floor or down the inside of a wall space but from one floor to lower levels, increasing the amount of damage your home experiences.

If a leak develops while you are away, the damage to your property can be extensive. Contact SERVPRO of West Bradenton /Anna Maria as soon as possible to avoid further damage, including the development of mold.

Shutting off the source of the water should be the first thing done if it can be safely accomplished. Standing water can pose an electrical hazard if electrical outlets or wiring are immersed in the water. If you are not sure about your safety, you should have professionals complete the shut-down the electricity prior to shutting off the water. Everyone should remain clear of the water to be safe.

After the flow of water has been stopped, call in SERVPRO to properly mitigate the water damage for you. Because water can infiltrate porous materials like drywall throughout your home, it is tough to remove completely.

The structure water damaged area must have the standing water extracted first. If this is not done properly, warping and deterioration of walls and other structures in your home can quickly occur. Then the absorbed moisture and humidity in the interior environment must be mitigated to acceptable levels. If not, this can lead to not only dangerous structural problems but also the growth of mold and mildew. These can cause health effects in your family members over time.

Water Damage From Bradenton To The Beaches

6/22/2021 (Permalink)

A green SERVPRO fan is shown on the floor of a storage room Technicians from SERVPRO of West Bradenton / Anna Maria are trained extensively in water damage restoration

SERVPRO of West Bradenton / Anna Maria restoration technicians are trained to deal with all types of water leaks. Leaks are one of the most expensive types of damage that can happen to a home, but also one of the least detected. In some cases it can take months or even years for leaks to cause visual damage, but by that point, it’s too late to take preventative measures.

Leaks can weaken structures, waste water, dissolve building materials, creates dangerous compounds, and foster mold growth. These are some of the most common leaks we encounter on a typical residential call, and how they start: Pipe Leaks Pipe leaks, in cabinets, behind walls, or anywhere else, are one of the most common sources of water damage.

Pipes are often deliberately placed out of view of occupants, so when one develops a leak, it can be a while before anyone notices. These hidden pipe leaks often occur close to normally dry wood and fabric, and once these are consistently soaked by leaking water, they can lose structural integrity or even develop patches of mold growth. In extreme cases, residents sometimes only learn of these leaks when part of their ceiling crashes down into the living room.

Sink, Shower, and Tub Leaks These leaks are often much more damaging and much more noticeable than a pipe leak because they are usually caused by a resident in some way and the leak is immediate. As such, they have less potential for long-term water damage, but can be a big problem, and cause a bigger mess.

Water Tanks and Heaters When water heaters or tanks leak, the damage can go on for hours until it is discovered, causing severe damage to surrounding objects and materials. It is important to know the age of your water heater and consult with a professional plumber when you should replace your water tank heater. Water tank heaters have a manufacturer’s useful life and if your water tank has not been serviced or ignored for many years, the consequences can be very damaging.

Understanding Storms In Bradenton

6/21/2021 (Permalink)

The image of a hurricane is shown Call SERVPRO of West Bradenton/Anna Maria Island (941) 792-7715, for help from the leading experts in storm damage restoration.

Coastal towns like West Bradenton and Anna Maria Island are more familiar than most with tropical storms and their damaging effects. Did you know that there are 10 different common storm types? Each with unique causes and unique damage.

SERVPRO of West Bradenton/Anna Maria Island knows how important the safety of a house is, especially when a storm hits. This blog is meant to provide basic information about different types of storms - and hurricanes in particular - and their damaging effects.

The 10 most common storms are:
Hurricanes

Tornadoes

Flooding

Snow storm

Hail storm

Thunderstorm

Lightning storm

Tropical storms

Ice storms

Derecho storms

On the Florida Gulf Coast, it’s safe to say that we won’t be expecting ice or snow storms any time soon. Derecho storms are unlikely too. These monster storms are so vast that they are actually composed of multiple storms that cross 240 miles and can reach speeds of over 58 miles per hour. They are as rare as they are big.

The Gulf Coast is more likely to experience a hurricane or tropical storm, even a tornado. Hurricanes can be strong enough that their effects can be felt far inland as strongly as they are felt on the coast. (Hurricane Sandy impacted 24 states)

Because life on the coast comes with obvious risks thanks to the likelihood of a hurricane, it’s very to be familiar with how hurricanes cause damage.

These are the common causes of storm damage from hurricanes:

One: Storm Surge

Storm surge affects the coast most directly. This weather event happens because wind pushes more and more excess water toward the shore with nowhere for it to go. Eventually, all that water piles up far higher than the predicted tide level. Then it shoves onto the shore and even inland. Storm surge is powerful enough to damage buildings, roads, and other structures.

Two: Floods

Hurricanes cause floods in two main ways: rainfall and storm surge. Both have the ability to cause floods to happen across a wide geographical area. Rainfall from hurricanes can spread farther than 100 miles from where the hurricane landed. A tropical storm does not even have to be classified as a hurricane to cause destructive and widespread rain and floods.

Three: Wind

Hurricane wind can reach speeds anywhere between 74-155 miles per hour. This wind is powerful, fast and destructive. Hurricane winds can knock down power lines and trees, carry debris far and wide, and even cause a domino effect of damage. Roofs can be lifted from homes.

Storm damage can spread wide, especially on the coast. There are several precautions that you can take to prevent storm damage, such as adding weather resistant features to your home. Every home, office, and vehicle should include an emergency preparedness kit.

Cleaning up in the aftermath of a storm can be overwhelming and dangerous. Call SERVPRO of West Bradenton/Anna Maria Island (941) 792-7715, for help from the leading experts in storm damage restoration.

Some Things You Should Know About Bradenton Water Damage And Mold

6/15/2021 (Permalink)

Dark mold is shown in a corner While bleach can erase the unsightly black marks of mold spores on the surface, the fungus is still present in the wall.

Using Bleach On Mold After Water Damage

If you have water damage in your Bradenton home, you've probably thought about the possibility of mold. If you have already discovered mold , do not use bleach to try and clean it.
The idea that bleach kills mold spores is simply not true. Unfortunately that idea has made its way into the do-it-yourself community, leading homeowners and property managers to believe that they can actually kill a mold problem by spraying a bleach solution onto a wall and then wiping it clean.

While the area appears to be clean and rid of the black fungus on the surface, this particular method actually makes the situation worse.

When mold and bleach interact, the mold spores react as if they are being attacked. Spraying the fungus down with bleach causes the mold to shoot off spores to protect itself. So as you are wiping the surface, you are actually spreading the mold spores further out. If the cloth is used in other areas of the home, it can spread the mold to areas that were unaffected, otherwise known as cross contamination.

Mold thrives on moisture, and since the primary component of bleach is water, the solution actually feeds the fungus rather than kill it. Another reason bleach is no match for mold is because its chemicals, which include chlorine, do not penetrate through the porous areas of the sheetrock or wood where the deep roots of the mold spores are located.

Still another reason not to use bleach to combat a mold problem is because the solution is highly acidic, which can threaten the integrity of porous materials. The acidity levels in bleach wreak havoc on the fibers that compose most home building materials such as drywall and baseboard. And not only will the bleach compromise the integrity of the material, it will spread the mold spores to otherwise unaffected areas. Because this damage is occurring beneath the surface, it goes unseen and unnoticed.

While bleach can erase the unsightly black marks of mold spores on the surface, the fungus is still present in the wall. Mold has deep roots and can permeate to the outer areas of the wall, as it seeks out moisture and a food source. Since bleach can only clean up the ugly surface marks and not completely kill the roots, it is not a recommended solution for mold remediation.

SERVPRO of West Bradenton / Anna Maria never uses bleach on any of its mold remediation projects. Our professionally trained crews understand the problems that can arise out of using bleach on mold spores. With over 25 years of experience responding to property owners and managers with mold in their homes or businesses, our staff can properly and completely clean up any mold situation with the right products and equipment.

As a certified mold remediation company, SERVPRO requires our staff to be trained and able to explain the different types of methods that can be used to clean up mold for our customers. We never sell our services based on fear but rather on information.

More Than 10,000 House Fires Are Started By A Grill Every Year

6/13/2021 (Permalink)

Taking A Few Minutes To Ensure You Are Grilling Safely Could Save Your Home From Fire Damage

Did you know that seven out of every 10 adults in the U.S. have a grill or smoker. According to The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 10,200 house fires are started by grills every year on average.

Whether you grill with charcoal, wood, propane or natural gas, don't firing it up until you are sure it's safe. Embers can wreak havoc with a nearby wood pile or even your home.

Make certain that vents are clean and operable and that there are no areas that have rusted through. Take the time to thoroughly clean your grill each season. Grease buildup can cause a fire that cannot be easily extinguished. Keep your grill at least 10 feet away from your home or other combustible surfaces.

For gas grills, check and secure all gas connections to avoid gas leaks. Soapy water sprayed onto each connection and fitting will reveal an unwanted leak.

Where you place your grill is important as well. Let's start with a basic rule, never barbecue indoors, including in a garage. You can literally suffocate every living thing in your home. Don't barbecue on a wood deck if there is a chance that dry grass is growing beneath it. You can start a fire that can't be easily extinguished. Use starter fluid sensibly.

Apply it to the coals and then light your fire. Don't stand next to the fire and squirt lighter fluid onto the flames. Don't use gasoline or paint thinner to start your fire. When using a gas grill NEVER turn the gas on with the lid closed. An accumulation of gas can lead to an explosion.

Professional Carpet Cleaning For Your Bradenton Business Is Only A Phone Call Away

6/11/2021 (Permalink)

A vacuum cleaner is shown on carpet Give us a call, we are here to help. 941-792-7715

At SERVPRO of West Bradenton / Anna Maria, we care about carpet care and making sure all of our customers have the best information available.
We have learned over the years that carpet cleaning is the subject of much confusion. In fact, people have so many misconceptions about carpet cleaning that we offer you this information. When you are choosing a carpet cleaning company you can understand why it's important to select certified, trained experts. SERVPRO of West Bradenton / Anna Maria (941) 792-7715.

Misconception #1: You should wait as long as possible before cleaning your carpet.NO! Dirt is an abrasive - like sandpaper. Every time you step on the carpet, you grind dirt into your carpet fibers. This cuts your carpet, just as if you had used a knife, causing it to wear out faster. A dirty carpet will not last nearly as long as a clean carpet. And while vacuuming helps, by itself it is simply not enough. The longer you wait to have your carpet cleaned, the more damage you do to your carpet and the faster it wears out.

Misconception #2: The only reason to clean carpets is to get out the dirt. As you probably know, outdoor air contains pollens, fungus, bacteria, air pollution, cigarette smoke, car exhaust -- and hundreds of other chemicals. When you and your family members come into your home, you carry those pollens, bacteria and chemicals in your hair, on your skin, clothing and shoes. Not surprisingly, all those chemicals, pollens and bacteria wind up -- you guessed it -- in your carpet. If you have allergies, asthma, emphysema, or other breathing problems -- one major source of your problem could be the pollens, fungus, and chemicals in your carpet. If you're sensitive to cigarette smoke, you might find that you'll breathe easier after you hire a professional to get those harmful chemicals out of your carpet. So in addition to getting rid of dirt, another important reason to clean your carpet is to get rid of pollens, fungus, bacteria, chemicals and the tars and residue from tobacco smoke.

Misconceptions #3: One method of carpet cleaning is as good as another. Unfortunately this is not true. You can choose from two primary methods: Dry cleaning or hot water extraction.

DRY CLEANING METHODS Many people believe that dry cleaning your carpet is like dry cleaning your clothing. This is not true. All carpet cleaning methods use water to clean. Some methods use more water than others. “Dry Cleaning” for carpets should really be called “Low Moisture Cleaning”. Here are three methods of dry cleaning carpet. Dry Foam When a carpet cleaner uses dry foam, they apply shampoo to your carpet, allow it to dry, and then sucks the dried shampoo chunks into a vacuum.

Can you imagine applying shampoo to your hair, allowing it to dry and then removing the shampoo from your head with a vacuum? This method can leave a residue in your carpet, which is one reason dry foam is not very effective, however a new spin on dry foam called ENCAPSULATION cleaning is quite effective. It utilizes a crystallizing detergent to suspend and capture soil particles in an acrylic polymer which actually CAN be vacuumed out. It is a cost effective maintenance method for commercial carpets.

Bonnet Cleaning The Bonnet Cleaning method is similar to dry foam. The major difference is that when bonnet method is used, the company sets a large cotton bonnet on your carpet. Using a machine, the bonnet spins from side to side, absorbing the dirt that's in the carpet. After the bonnet is saturated with dirt, another cotton bonnet is applied. Bonnet cleaning is like trying to use a large towel to rub the dirt out of your carpet. It can, however be effective on glue down or commercial carpets.

Dry Compound The dry-compound method spreads an absorbent mixture made of recycled corn stalks. It looks like wet sawdust all over your carpeting. Then the machine brushes the mixture into the carpet, which in theory causes dirt to absorb into the mixture. Once the mixture has dried, a vacuum cleaner sucks the residue out of the carpeting. However, vacuuming does not remove all the residue, which accumulates over time between the carpet and pad. Because the carpet is not rinsed in any way, this method is not very effective.

HOT WATER EXTRACTION The second carpet cleaning method is called “hot water extraction”. This is a fancy way of saying that a hot water cleaning solution under high pressure is forced into the carpet and then sucked out of the carpet. This method is also referred to as steam cleaning even though steam is not used. Shaw Industries, the world's largest carpet manufacturer, recommends hot water extraction and you can choose from two different types: Portable extraction, which is done with a small machine.

Or truck mount extraction which means the large cleaning machine is mounted in a truck or van. Misconception

#4: Having the right equipment is all a company needs to clean your carpets properly. NOT TRUE.

Many companies own hot-water cleaners -- but many company employees don't know how to use them. You probably know someone who bought the newest computer on the market, but didn't learn how to use it for a year or more. The same is true with carpet cleaning machines. The company you are considering may own good equipment, but the employees may not know how to use it correctly.

This is why it's important that you choose your carpet cleaner carefully. The best carpet cleaning companies are those that have been certified by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification, known as the IICRC.

A carpet cleaning company cannot buy this certification. The carpet cleaner must earn the certification through study, experience and the successful completion of formal, written examinations. In addition to IICRC training all SERVPRO carpet techs are required to complete a proprietary SERVPRO course training in production and safety. The IICRC provides written credentials to the companies it certifies. So before you choose a carpet cleaner, ask to see written proof of the company's IICRC certification. All certified technicians are required to carry an IICRC certification card with them. Before you select a company, decide what you want to accomplish.

If you want the carpet cleaner to remove only some of the dirt, you can choose from hundreds of companies that use small shampooers or other cleaning methods.
On the other hand, if you want your carpet thoroughly cleaned -- if you want to remove the harmful dirt, bacteria, pollens, chemicals and tobacco residues -- then you need to hire a company that uses a hot water extraction unit mounted in a truck. This is the only way to assure that your carpet remains healthy and free from dirt, disease-causing bacteria, and hurtful chemicals. If you want the best, most powerful cleaning available.

SERVPRO of West Bradenton / Anna Maria has powerful portable extraction units that we use for high rises and other places our truck mounted machines cannot be used. We offer the same quality assurance, however it just takes us more time. So remember that the price you see offered may not be for the services you want performed.

As a way of improving our profession, we take a lot of time in educating the public in our industry’s best practices. The only way you can make an intelligent decision is to have all the facts you need. This is why we are engaged in writing this article and many others for your home or business. Below are some things for consideration to try and understand pricing.

First, the type of carpet: Certain types of carpet are harder to clean than others. So before we can give you a quote, we need to know the type of carpet you want cleaned.

Second, the amount of soiling: Carpet that hasn't been cleaned for ten years will take longer to clean than carpet that was cleaned within the last six months. Third, the amount of furniture that has to be moved: If we have to move your furniture, the bid must include that labor. To recap, we consider the type of carpet, the amount of soiling, and the amount of furniture that has to be moved. So, as you can now imagine, every quotation is different. If you want your carpeting to be completely and thoroughly cleaned, call SERVPRO of West Bradenton / Anna Maria (941)792-7715.

In addition to 24/7 emergency services like water damage, fire damage restoration, mold mediation, and bio hazard cleanup, we are your local experts in carpet and floor care.

Professional Restoration

If you have fire damage in your home there are a number of things that will need the attention of restoration professionals. Soot and smoke are a problem that need immediate attention from an experienced, trained technician.

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.

Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.

The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire.

Before restoration begins, SERVPRO West Bradenton / Anna Maria test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred.

The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting.

Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber
Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood
Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

This kind of damage can occur anywhere, but if it happens to you in West Bradenton or Anna Maria, call us today.

Commercial Business Fires In Bradenton

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, there more than a 100,000 fires in nonresidential buildings in the United States a year. Fatalities have been decreased by about 30%, but businesses still experienced $2.7 billion in financial losses.

If there's a fire in your commercial building in West Bradenton or Anna Maria you need to begin addressing the remaining smoke damage as soon as the fire is out. This will require you to hire professional smoke cleaning services. This cleanup team will have a lot to take care of, and you want to allow them to handle remediation rather than attempting to fix items on your own.

1. Remedy Smoke and Fire Damage

Soot damage can travel fast. Areas of the building that did not actually catch fire may still need to be remedied for smoke and soot. This is particularly true for textiles and upholstery. You do not want to simply toss these items in a washing machine. Improperly washing items with soot may only deteriorate them further. Instead, give these items to professionals so that they can be washed and dry-cleaned adequately.

2. Clean Up Fire Retardant

Smoke damage restoration professionals will also need to clean up any fire retardant used to put out the fire. Whether this is material that came from a fire extinguisher or from the firefighters, it could be dangerous to handle on your own. Some extinguishers use ammonium phosphate, and you do not want to use chlorine to clean up that chemical. Experts know what precautions to take to stay safe.

3. Throw Away Badly Damaged Items

Although professionals will know how to salvage some items, it will be best to throw others away. Occasionally, this disposal is in the best interest of your health and safety. For example, food should always be disposed of following a fire. It could become contaminated from smoke and soot, making it dangerous to consume.

A wall is shown where drywall was removed because of mold SERVPRO of West Bradenton/Anna Maria knows how to apply the restoration techniques required to return your home to preloss condition

Do not delay if you suspect mold damage. Call us right away. SERVPRO of West Bradenton/Anna Maria. 941-792-7715.

The professional technicians at SERVPRO of West Bradenton/Anna Maria understand the need for quick response. Immediate remediation is key to controlling any escalating costs. The longer the remediation is delayed, the higher the cost of restoration.

The IICRC outlines five major principles of mold remediation.

1. Make sure safety and health precautions are taken by cleanup professionals, such as the SERVPRO of West Bradenton/ Anna Maria team. Mold-contaminated buildings can be associated with a number of health effects. Anyone involved in the mold remediation process must be protected from exposure through a combination of practices and controls.

2. A post-cleanup assessment by an independent environmental expert. An effective mold remediation cannot be developed without first determining the extent of the contamination to be removed. To ensure that remediation work is being properly performed, it is highly recommended that appropriate documentation of the remediation process be kept by project management

3. Control of mold before it spreads further. Eliminating mold at the source of contamination is essential. Once mold spores spread through the air, it will be much more difficult to capture.

4. Oversee the proper physical removal of the mold. The mold must be physically removed from the structure. Attempts to isolate mold or remove signs of mold on the surface are not adequate. Note that bleach alone cannot kill mold.

5. Ensure that moisture is controlled to limit future contamination or recontamination. Mold growth is virtually inevitable if moisture is not controlled. Moisture problems must be identified, located and corrected or controlled as soon as possible.

Application of these principles may involve multiple disciplines and professionals from a wide range of restoration and indoor environmental fields.

Eliminating Fire Odors From Your Bradenton Home

5/18/2021 (Permalink)

Old Smells In A Home You Just Purchased

When you looked at dream home you didn't notice the smell. Now the dream home is all yours, including the cigarette smell from the previous owner.

The smell of cigarette smoke can penetrate throughout a home and give it a stale smell. Regardless of the reason behind your cigarette removal need, home deodorization is high on your list of priorities. If you have allergies or asthma, cigarette smoke can be especially irritating.

This is not something that you will want to take on yourself. The odor can be difficult to remove. This is because cigarettes leave behind

• Toxic and irritating gases

• Tar vapors

• Smoke residue

Cigarettes produce toxic and irritating gases such as phenol, ammonia gases and carbon monoxide. They also release tar vapors that become sticky. These vapors, residues and gases are able to travel everywhere. Ozone, or O3, is one of the few home deodorization techniques that actually works to combat this.

That is because an ozone generator eliminates odor by oxidizing the air. The oxidized air is circulated through the air just as smoke is and so is able to get to all the places cigarette smoke does, effectively getting rid of the smelly residue.

If you need to remove odors from your home or business, you can hire professionals in SERVPRO West Bradenton / Anna Maria (941) 792-7715. They can help you identify the source and eliminate the problem. Many odors can be removed without a trace. Although cigarette smoke is one of the most offensive and prevalent odors, it is not the only one. Home deodorization can also include pet odors, spill odors and other foul smells. Oxidization is just one of many ways specialist might remove offensive smells.

Sometimes special equipment and treatments are necessary to clean air ducts, carpets, upholstery and hard surfaces.

Since each odor removal is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions. We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your home. We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care. SERVPRO West Bradenton / Anna Maria (941) 792-7715

If you have not yet created a family emergency plan, here are some helpful hints to take into consideration when doing so:

1. Emergency Alerts and Warnings

We will always have radio and television broadcast alerts available to us, but thanks to today’s technologies, it is very easy to receive emergency alerts and warnings on your smartphone that is equipped with a weather app or Google. You will quickly receive emergency alerts, which can provide you with valuable time in severe weather situations.

2. Storm Shelters

Living in an area where tornadoes are common means you’ll want to seek shelter in the lowest part of your home, preferably a basement if you have one. If there is no basement, find an interior room on the lowest level that is away from windows and doors. There are other reasons a storm shelter is needed besides tornadoes, and by visiting ready.gov you can learn more about those situations.

3. Evacuation Routes

Do you know your evacuation routes? You should always have multiple routes mapped out that can serve as an evacuation route since things such as hurricanes, flooding and fires can force you from your home in a hurry and one route could become impassable. Make sure you remember your furry family members when evacuating and find out if there are places to stay with your pets along the way.

4. Keeping in Touch

Reliance on cell phones is our first choice for communicating with our family members, but there will be times when that won’t be possible. Cell phone towers don’t always withstand a storms fury and power may also be lost, you may lose or leave your cell phone behind, and, if there is no power, you will not be able to charge your batteries.

Make sure there is an emergency communication plan completed for your family and designate a safe meeting place for your family in case you get separated.

If a storm does cause damage to your home or business, don’t hesitate to call your friends at SERVPRO of West Bradenton/Anna Maria Island (941) 747-2333 to get the cleanup and restoration process started.

Understanding Storms And Your Business

Natural disasters can happen quickly and without advanced notice. Everything from floods, hurricanes and tornadoes to wildfires and earthquakes. The key to being able to keep your business going is to be prepared for any or all of the worst-case scenarios.

Taking action and being prepared for those scenarios involves developing a natural disaster plan for your business. Some of the aspects to be considered when designing that plan are below.

What to Take Into Consideration

There are many things you will need to consider when you are developing a disaster plan for your business.

Included in those considerations are:

How to safely protect your employees
Securing your assets

How to get your business up and running smoothly again

FEMA, the Red Cross and Ready.gov have created many helpful checklists that can identify areas that need to be included in your natural disaster preparedness plan as well as highlight areas where more planning needs to take place.

Employee Safety Is Key

When disaster strikes without warning, your primary concern must be having a plan in place that lays out procedures and safety measures for the protection of employees and visitors.

Evacuation routes and all exits from your facility need to be clearly marked—and you need to provide a place where people can take shelter, look into installing emergency lights, and have a designated staff of “safety wardens” properly trained and ready to help with all emergency efforts.

When picking out a place to take shelter, a basement or storm cellar is ideally the best location in the event of tornadoes or other high-wind situations. If that is not possible, designate a small interior room on the lowest level of the building or use a closet or interior hallway.

Don’t Forget About Your Assets

While brick and mortar locations are generally sturdy places to have a business, there are still important considerations to make about how to protect the assets inside the building. Everything from equipment to merchandise is at risk and so are thousands of dollars when a natural disaster strikes.

Be sure you have put together a very detailed and up-to-date inventory and pictures, if possible, of these items. This will be needed for filing insurance claims. If your assets are located on a computer server, take the necessary steps to ensure that it is regularly performing backups and that you are using a storage system that cannot be damaged, such as cloud storage options.

As a building owner, spend time walking through your building with a contractor to uncover areas that may need to be improved with regard to structural integrity. A contractor can also walk you through safety upgrades and advise on any areas that may not be structurally sound to withstand certain weather situations.

Get Back to Business, Faster

Businesses usually must shut down after a natural disaster due to damage and needed repairs or rebuilding. Every day you remain closed is another day you’re losing lost profits. Make a wise move and set up a storm fund, which will help you with additional costs that may not be covered by your insurance.

Compile a list of contractors who will make themselves readily available for repairs and/or construction needs, and find a cleanup and restoration service will be available to quickly respond to your emergency situation.

Fire Safety In The Kitchen

1/4/2021 (Permalink)

A man is shown trying to put out a kitchen fire with a fire extinguisher Have a fire extinguisher in/near the kitchen

The kitchen is often the hub of the home where family and friends will gather and where meals are prepared. The kitchen is also an area where many home fires occur.

Cooking fires top the charts as the No. 1 cause of home fires and injuries. The leading cause of these kitchen fires is unattended cooking.

In one year alone, over $130 million in homeowners insurance claims related to grease and other cooking fires was paid out by State Farm.

Fire Safety Tips

One kitchen fire safety tip is staying in the kitchen while cooking, but it is not the only fire safety tip you should be following. Here are some other helpful tips to observe while cooking:

1. Be mindful of your how you are dressed. Long, flowing sleeves or big, baggy, loose-fitting clothing could catch on fire if you aren’t careful while cooking over the stove. It’s best to wear short or close-fitted sleeve shirts and make sure any baggy shirts are tucked in or tied back.

2. Watch the items around the stovetop. Be sure not to place kitchen towels, oven mitts, appliance cords or even curtains too close to the stovetop when cooking. Ideally, anything flammable will be moved away from it.

3. Have a fire extinguisher in/near the kitchen. Every home needs to have at least one fire extinguisher located in your home, preferably one that is near your kitchen. Make sure you know how to properly use the extinguisher, just in case it is ever needed.

4. Do not throw hot grease in the garbage can. The temperature of hot grease alone may just be hot enough to cause something in the trash to burn even if the grease is not on fire. Let the grease cool a bit and then dispose of it in an old coffee can. Also, know the smoke points of the oils you cook with. Be sure to never subject a low-smoke point oil to high heat when cooking, as it could catch fire.

5. Have a fire escape plan established. By creating a fire escape plan, you are preparing your family for a worst-case scenario, which is never fun, but it’s better for everyone to be prepared if an emergency were to occur. Review exit routes and designated meeting points with your family, making sure that everyone knows what to do.

Fire safety in the kitchen is an absolute necessity, as it can help prevent dangerous and destructive cooking fires. If your home has experienced damage from a cooking fire, know that SERVPRO of West Bradenton/Anna Maria Island is here to make it “Like it never even happened.”

Understanding The Types Of Water Involved In Water Damage

Water Damage In Bradenton Or Anna Marie Island

Understanding the differences in the types of water that are involved with water damage will help you when dealing with the cleanup. It is easy to think that all water causing damage is the same, but there are three separate classifications for it: clean water, gray water and black water.

Regardless of what type of water has caused the damage, there will always be a cleanup and restoration process that will need to be done afterward. The most important thing to accomplish is removing all the moisture and damp items quickly, so that mold cannot begin to flourish in its ideal environment.

No. 1: Clean Water

This water is considered “clean” and not the type to pose an immediate threat to your health. It is free of contaminants and can come from:

Broken water lines

Malfunctioning appliances

Toilet holding tanks

Snow melt and rainwater

Of the three different classifications of water, this is the easiest type of water damage to work with, as there are fewer microbes living in the water. However, after 48 hours and having contact with the building surfaces, clean water can move up to category two, which is gray water.

No. 2: Gray Water

In the case of gray water, damage cleanup and restoration can become a little more involved.

This water may pose a health risk, due to it containing slight amounts of chemical or biological contamination. This slight contamination in gray water means that it would need to be thoroughly treated before it is safe to consume.

Gray water is the type of water that can come from dishwashers, aquariums, showers, etc. Again, the 48-hour exposure time applies here as well, with gray water turning into black water if not treated.

No. 3: Black Water

Black water is the most hazardous of the three classifications, and it is considered to be highly contaminated with harmful chemicals and biological matter. This includes floodwaters containing soil and all sewage waters.

Sewage is contaminated with microbes, including bacteria, protozoans, molds, fungi and more, many of these can be harmful to humans.

Some of the diseases that can be transmitted by black water are:

Cholera

Typhoid

Hepatitis

Gastroenteritis-type illnesses

Just remember that when it comes to floods, any water should be treated as if it is black water since it picks up contaminants along its path.

The three classifications of floodwater are recognized by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Remediation Certification (IICRC), an organization that certifies and sets the standards for the cleaning and restoration industries. Our technicians all study IICRC standards and best practices in water restoration and are available to help determine the steps to take to get your home back to normal.

Protecting Your Small Business Against Water Damage in Bradenton, FL

It is important to know different ways that water damage can affect your business, before you look into prevention. You should be aware of the different areas of your business where the damage is likely to occur, before beginning to look for ways to reduce the risk of water damage.

First look where you have appliances in your building, such as washers, air conditioning units, dishwashers, refrigerators, and water heaters. Drains and pipes can also be a source of water damage. Examine the roof as well, looking for damage from weather that could make your building more vulnerable.

Protecting Your Business

You cannot have certainty in preventing water damage entirely, but you can minimize potential damage by utilizing the following tips:

  • Prevent Plumbing Leaks. Watch out for leaks in the plumbing in the kitchen and bathroom. This may mean grouting and caulking around sinks and toilets, and replacing any missing tiles.
  • Verify water Resistance. Make sure that the components of your building are made using water resistant materials, as this will prevent a great deal of damage to the interior and exterior of your building in the event of a water disaster.
  • Secure Hoses. Be sure that any hose connections are secure, including those that connect two appliances in the building.
  • Insulate Water Pipes. This is important to prevent exposure of the pipes to harshly cold temperatures. These pipes are typically in the garage or basement of buildings. The insulation will help prevent potential water damage by preventing cracking and freezing.
  • Maintain Leak Detection Systems. It is good to have both an active system and a passive system.
  • Secure Adequate Insurance. Do not allow water damage to ruin your small business. Make sure to take all of the proper precautions that you need to take in order to protect your small business and make sure that you get all of the business insurance coverage that you need to minimize risks.

Property Can Be Restored With Professional Help

Stacks of old Newspapers are shown Our staff is highly trained in property damage restoration

You may sometimes hear about hoarding on reality TV, but it’s a serious issue. When a space is used for hoarding, it can eventually lead to a variety of health-related hazards, including an increased risk of mold growth.

But what is hoarding exactly? Hoarding—which impacts as many as 1 in 50 people—is an obsessive-compulsive disorder that causes people to collect and resist discarding possessions. Usually this disorder develops in secret, and over time, those possessions ultimately accumulate in large quantities that can take over a home or commercial space.

Those affected by the condition cling to those items because they believe they will be of value at some point, but in reality, most often the items have little to no value.

As these items add up, they can become fire hazards and can hide pests or mold growth.

If a space you own has been used for hoarding, what should you do? Your best move—call in a team of professionals from SERVPRO of West Bradenton/Anna Maria to make the space usable again.

3 Stages of the Clean-up Process

While you might think that you just need to clear out clutter and clean up, there are a number of special considerations when it comes to a space that’s been used for hoarding.

Technicians from SERVPRO of West Bradenton/Anna Maria will provide a comprehensive clean-up that mitigates any potential safety hazards.

Removal of Items

This is the part of cleaning up that most people think of. This stage involves clearing the space of all clutter and accumulated items.

If other items not related to hoarding have become contaminated, those may also need to be removed and even discarded.

Removal of Dangerous Substances
Hoarding accumulates piles of clutter and other objects, which can conceal health-related hazards, including rodents and pests, along with toxic mold growth.

To ensure you are safely cleaning the space and not putting yourself at risk, partner with a highly-trained team outfitted in safety gear.

Complete Cleaning

Once the clutter and debris are removed and the space is cleared, a professional team will perform a deep-cleaning. This will remove all residue and odors—ensuring the space is ready to use again in the future.

Fire Prevention In Your Home

8/12/2020 (Permalink)

Several candles are shown burning We’ve received advance training in restoration techniques, and we have the experience and specialized equipment to quickly restore your property.

Considering the possibility of a fire in your home is not pleasant. For thousands of people throughout the country each year, a residential fire has become a reality.

Want to take steps to protect your home from a structure fire? Take some time to review common fire hazards and some lesser-known ones.

Remember to Watch Those Candles

After reviewing data for a five-year period, the National Fire Protection Association found that fire departments in the U.S. responded to an estimated 8,700 home structure fires a year that were started by candles.

Candles are reported to have caused 2 percent of home fires, with 3 percent resulting in death and 7 percent with injuries. There were an average of 24 home candle fires reported per day over those five years—and December was when home candle fire instances were most common.

Of all the candle fires during this time span, 37 percent started in bedrooms and were responsible for 36 percent of the associated deaths and 51 percent of the associated injuries. In total, there were 82 deaths, 800 injuries and $295 million in direct property damage.

If you’re burning a candle, make sure it’s at least one foot away from anything flammable and in a sturdy holder that won’t tip over easily. You should not be burning candles in a home where oxygen is being used, and remember to always blow out all candles before leaving a room or going to sleep.

Smoking and Home Structure Fires

Cooking is the leading cause of home fires, but smoking inside is the leading cause of home fire deaths. In 2014, an estimated 17,200 home structure fires were reported due to smoking materials, which includes cigarettes, cigars and pipes.

The Coalition for Fire-Safe Cigarettes reported that those fires resulted in 570 deaths, 1,140 injuries and $426 million in property damage.

Fire-safe cigarettes are the safest option, and deep, sturdy ashtrays should always be used. Put out all cigarette butts and ashes in water or sand prior to throwing them.

Smokers should know that most deaths result from fires that have started in living rooms, family rooms or bedrooms. Also, keep in mind that one out of four fatal victims of smoking-material fires is not the smoker whose cigarette started the fire.

Glassware Can Be a Fire Hazard

There are many lesser-known hazards that may be present in your home that could also cause of home structure fires.

Some types of glassware in your home can pose a fire risk, because when sunlight passes through them, the concentrated ray could ignite flammable materials. This is why it’s smart to move glass accessories away from windows.

Look out for loose outlets in your home, because the movement of these electrical outlets could loosen the wires connected to the outlet and create dangerous arcing, increasing the risk of fire.

Dust can also pose a fire risk when collecting near electrical sockets and floor heaters. Vacuuming or sweeping your floors regularly and cleaning behind those hard-to-reach places, like an entertainment system, can help prevent buildup.
Our professionals are experts at guiding you through the process to restore your home or business.

We take a caring and emphatic approach, treating you, your home or business, and your belongings with respect. Our team will be at your side step-by-step providing knowledge to navigate through any size fire or smoke damage.

Tips To Dealing With Water Damage In Your Bradenton Home

7/22/2020 (Permalink)

From a burst pipe to a malfunctioning dishwasher or storm damage, there are countless ways water damage can happen in your home.

While water damage can be an especially common issue for homeowners to deal with, there are plenty of ways you can help protect your home.

Ways to Protect Your Home

Water damage may not seem like much of a hassle for you to deal with, but drying out and cleaning up will prove to be tedious, not to mention there is a good possibility mold will follow. Mold is a very common side effect of water damage, as mold can begin to grow and flourish within 24–48 hours of moisture exposure.

When you begin to look for ways to protect your home, it may help you to break it down by areas of impact. These areas might include the basement, kitchen, bathroom, flooring and ceilings.

Preventing water damage in the basement begins by preventing any water seepage, which can be done by resealing vulnerable areas of the basement, ensuring that water drains away from your home and installing a backwater valve.

Your kitchen and bathrooms may experience water damage resulting from plumbing issues and appliance failures.

Make sure to regularly:

Inspect all appliances for issues with hoses and faucets

Check seals and caulking around showers and tubs, ensuring they are watertight

Know where the main shut-off valve is in your home

Don’t leave the house while the washer or dishwasher is running

There are things you can do to protect the possessions in your home from water damage, but don’t be surprised if it is not always possible. Use waterproof bins to store items and keep items stored on shelves off of the floor—which is especially recommended when using your basement for storage.

Recovering From Water Damage

If your home does experience a water damage situation, you stand a good chance of salvaging anything that can be dried out within 48 hours.

Your first step should be to contact your insurance company and assess the extent of the water damage in your home as well as identify the type of water that is involved.

The types of water that are involved in water damage are:

Water from rain, condensation, leaky pipes, etc. is called “clean” water.

Slightly dirty water from dishwashers, washing machines, clean toilets, etc. is called “gray” water.

Water from sewage or serious flooding from nearby rivers, etc. is considered “black” water and this water can cause serious health problems.

Remove any wet objects from the home after a water damage disaster. Then dehumidify and dry your home out, followed by a thorough, disinfecting cleaning.

Pro tip: You can freeze wet books, photos and papers in a frost-free freezer to buy some extra time. This prevents mold and mildew from developing and causing more deterioration. Once able, you can remove them from the freezer and air-dry or fan-dry the pages.

It may seem like recovering from water damage is an overwhelming and slightly impossible task, but it doesn’t have to be.

You can call on the highly trained experts at SERVPRO of West Bradenton/Anna Maria Island (941) 792-7715, who are here to make it "Like it never even happened."

Understanding Water Damage In Your Bradenton or Anna Maria Island Home

6/26/2020 (Permalink)

Understanding Water Damage
Water damage is something that many homeowners will face, with it being the third most common reason for homeowners to file a homeowners insurance claim.

It is important to know the difference between water damage and gradual water damage, and how it can impact insurance claims. Examples of gradual damage are ongoing situations that have been happening over time, such as plumbing issues in the walls that will cause damage to walls, ceilings or floors, or water damage caused by cracks in the foundation. Unfortunately, many gradual water damage situations are not covered by homeowners insurance, while storm-related water damage usually is.

SERVPRO of West Bradenton / Anna Maria is locally owned and operated, so we are part of this community too. When you have a flooding or water emergency, we’re already nearby and ready to help.

Plumbing Failures and Water Damage
According to the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS), the leading causes of water damage are:

Plumbing supply system failures.

Per IBHS, plumbing supply system failures are the leading source of residential water losses and cost an average of $5,092 per incident after the deductible. It was also found that in homes 16 to 40 years of age,` this was a more frequent occurrence and made up a large group of supply system material failure claims.

Plumbing drain system failures.

This can occur when a sewer drain backs up and overflows into a home or from material breakdown issues. In their study, IBHS found that 52% of drain system failures were caused by sewer backups and 37% were related to material performance issues. IBHS also found that the average drain system failure was more expensive in southern states than in northern states.

Toilet failures.

Toilet failures fall second in line to plumbing supply system failures for residential water damage loss, and can be caused by a faulty fill valve or clogged drain lines. According to IBHS, toilet failures that occur on the first floor of a home resulted in more expensive claims than those that occurred in basements or upper floors.

Water heater failures.

If your water heater has reached its life expectancy, the tank begins to rust and corrode. This can result in leaking or bursting issues, and IBHS found that 69% of all water heater failures were the direct result of a slow leak or sudden burst and, on average, cost $4,444 per incident following the deductible.
Washing machine failures. Typically caused by supply hose failures, drain line failures and machine overflows, washing machine failures are one of the top 10 sources of residential water damage losses. Per IBHS, supply hose failures were responsible for over half of all washing machine-related losses.

Heavy Rain, High Wind and Lightning

Florida storms can be powerful and dangerous. Do you know who to call if you have storm damage to your home?

What can you do to minimize the damage to your home in Bradenton or Anna Maria Island? The first step is to call a specialist who can restore your home using the proper equipment. Here is what happens when you use a professional service to help with your flooded basement.

1. Find the Source:

The first thing that any professional is going to do is find the source of your flooding. If you already know where the leak is coming from, you can, of course, point them in the right direction. In some cases, it may be difficult to tell where the leak is coming from on your own.

2. Extract Water:

The next step is to extract the water. Experts will have equipment with them that you may not have access to on your own. For example, some people may have a sump pump in their home, but many don’t. Generally, before they can begin to restore the property, specialists will use a trash pump mounted to their truck to extract the flooding in your basement.

3. Salvage Any Materials:

If there are any materials that can be salvaged, they will do this for you. Additionally, they will be able to throw out what can’t be saved. This can be anything from drywall, carpets, stuffed animals, bedding and even ceiling tiles. If it’s porous, mold can grow inside the spaces of the object and be impossible to clean.

Before mold or other issues cost you more contact SERVPRO West Bradenton / Anna Maria  (941) 792-7715. The longer water is left standing, the more likely mold growth will become a problem. Mold can begin to grow in a flooded commercial site in 24 to 72 hours. Contact SERVPRO West Bradenton / Anna Maria  to eliminate standing water.

Why Bring In Experts To Remove Mold?

6/25/2020 (Permalink)

Restoration professionals may know something about getting rid of mold that you don't know.
There are good reasons not to use bleach to combat a mold problem. The solution is highly acidic, which can threaten the integrity of porous materials. The acidity levels in bleach wreak havoc on the fibers that compose most home building materials such as drywall and baseboard. Not only will the bleach compromise the integrity of the material, it will spread the mold spores to otherwise unaffected areas. SERVPRO of West Bradenton / Anna Maria is a trusted leader in the restoration industry and has the training, equipment, and expertise to handle your restoration and cleaning needs.

Storms In Bradenton Might Not Just Leave Behind Obvious Damage

Storms in Florida can be loud, dangerous and destructive. They can leave behind serious water damage to your home. If you have water damage after a storm, check for mold. If you suspect mold, don't wait, hire a professional. SERVPRO of West Bradenton / Anna Maria is always ready to answer your call (941) 792-7715.
Mold spores are present indoors and outdoors and do not pose a major problem until they find an environment that is conducive to growth. If you have noticed a mold or mildew smell in a commercial property, check five of the most common places for signs of visible mold. If you smell mold but cannot find any evidence, you should contact a service in Bradenton, FL that provides mold testing services.  1. Near water sources: Mold requires moisture to thrive. Bathrooms and kitchens are more likely to develop a mildew smell and mold than drier and less humid areas. Other parts of the building exposed to water may run the risk of developing mold.
2. Appliances: Appliances that process water such as air conditioners or water heaters are also prone to developing mold. Condensate or drain pans and terminal units are common locations for mold colonies.
3. Ductwork: HVAC systems expose ductwork to humid air. If condensation accumulates in duct linings or a leak occurs, mold can develop. Make sure that air-flow rates are set at an appropriate level.
4. Walls: Condensation, roof leaks or mechanical system leaks can lead to the growth of visible or hidden mold within walls. Moist masonry or wallboard is particularly susceptible to mold growth.
5. Ceiling tiles: Depending on the material, ceiling tiles can absorb moisture that encourages the development of mold. Several common culprits include condensation from pipes, humidity around HVAC vents and leaks.

6/18/2020 (Permalink)

There is no way to ever fully prepare for a life changing event like a fire. Business owners often prepare for the worse but forget about the everyday challenges, which can be just as crippling.

When a disaster strikes, having a plan and being able to put it into immediate action can mean the difference between staying open to service the needs of your customers and community or shutting down for a few days.

Forty percent of businesses do not reopen after a disaster and another 25 percent fail within one year according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Having a plan can ensure that you’re back in business quickly and able to provide products and services to your community.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the five most common causes of fires in commercial buildings are cooking equipment, heating equipment, electrical and lighting equipment, smoking materials, and intentional fire setting.

We focus on restoring versus replacing because restoring the affected areas of your property is substantially less costly than demolishing and replacing those areas.

If you have a moisture problem, it is likely that you will eventually also have a mold problem. Here are a few tips on what to do and whom to enlist to help.  Immediate Action  Mold only needs three criteria to thrive:  Air flow
 Moisture
A little time  Mold spores are transported through the air. Then, they settle in wet places and start to grow. To prevent the spread of mold in your home in Bradenton, FL you must control the airflow and moisture. The first thing you should do is turn off your HVAC system. This slows the spread of mold spores through the air and hopefully will protect your air ducts from an infestation of black mold. The second thing you must do is turn off the water. This helps to control moisture by cutting off any leaks throughout your home at the source.  Calling In the Experts   Your first call should be to a SERVPRO of West Bradenton / Anna Maria. It is also a good idea to have your air ducts inspected and, if a problem is found, cleaned before it can spread any further. Finally, as it does no good to fix a mold problem without addressing the moisture problem that led to it. Emergency situations are stressful and can leave you feeling helpless.  We focus on 24-hour emergency service and are dedicated to make it "Like it never even happened," no matter the size or type of disaster.
Black mold is not a problem to be taken lightly. If you act quickly, however, in initiating mold cleanup, you can fix the problem and prevent it from spreading. If you have any questions call SERVPRO of West Bradenton / Anna Maria (941) 792-7715.

Is Your Home Trying to Tell You Something?

6/18/2020 (Permalink)

It can be unsettling to hear knocking, hammering or whistling coming from your walls. However, plumbing can get noisy as the years go by. You don't always have to suspect a pipe break when you hear an unusual noise in the wall. Check out the three reasons for noisy pipes below.  1. Momentum Changes: If you're running a shower and quickly close the faucet, you may hear a clanging in your pipes. This is caused by the water's rapid change in speed. While not necessarily a problem by itself, the vibrations caused by the hammering can actually lead to loose pipes or a pipe break in extreme circumstances. You may be able to fix the problem in two ways. First, try to tighten or replace your straps. Second, install an anti-hammer device.
2. Obstructions: Blockages in your pipes can lead to a whistling sound whenever the water is forced past it. Distorted washers in valves, loose screws or sediment buildup could be a cause of an obstruction in your plumbing. You can fix the noise by locating where the whistling sound originates from, and then replacing the appropriate faucet washers and screws. If the blockage is somewhere within the pipe, you may have to worry about the possibility of a burst pipe should the obstruction grow. The best way to clean out the pipes is to call in a plumbing cleaning service.
3. High Pressure: If the water pressure in your Bradenton, FL home is set too high, it can cause your pipes to become quite noisy. While the sound may be annoying, you should be more concerned about the potential problems it can cause. It may not cause a pipe burst, but it could damage your dishwasher, washing machine or other appliances. You can fix this issue by making sure your water pressure is set no higher than 80 pounds per square inch.  The pipes in your home may be noisy for a wide range of reasons. Some of the noises can even leave your plumbing vulnerable to a pipe break. It is important you fix a broken pipe as soon as you find the problem.  Water damage can be a serious problem for your home. Call the experts at SERVPRO of West Bradenton / Anna Maria (941) 792-7715 if you have water damage. Our water removal and cleanup process also provides validation and documentation that your property is dry.  If your Bradenton property has been damaged by water caused by flooding or water leaks, we have the experience, expertise, and equipment to restore your property properly.

Commercial Flooding Tips For Bradenton and Anna Maria Island

6/15/2020 (Permalink)

Emergency situations are stressful and can leave you feeling helpless.  SERVPRO of West Bradenton/Anna Maria focuses on 24-hour emergency service and are dedicated to make it "Like it never even happened," no matter the size or type of disaster.
Water damage can be challenging to deal with. If you've experienced flooding in a commercial building, you’ll want to start the drying process immediately to prevent mold from forming and walls from disintegrating. Here are three important damage tips you should know before addressing the problem at hand.  1. Be Careful Around the Water  Whether it was a pipe burst, severe storm, or sewage backup that caused flooding in your building, it’s important to be careful around the water. Flood water is often contaminated by things such as sewage, toxic substances, and bacteria. While handling the water damage, try to follow these guidelines: • Wear protective clothing when in contact with flood water.
• Disinfect your hands before eating or drinking.
• Avoid direct contact with any flood water. Safety always comes first. Along with protecting yourself from contaminated water, throw away any food, liquids, or clothes that were affected by the water.  2. Turn Off the Power  When beginning the drying process, turn off the electricity lines within the building. Many damage tips will tell you that water is an excellent conductor of electricity and can often short out lines. To prevent any accident or harm, turn off the power before you start.  3. Take the Time to Air Dry  Although it might seem tempting to blast the heaters or air conditioning system, natural ventilation is a better solution. Sometimes forcing the drying process can be harmful to the structure of the building. To completely and thoroughly dry the building, open all the windows to create air circulation. From there, you can get cleaning tips and help from the experts at SERVPRO of West Bradenton/Anna Maria (941) 792-7715.  These damage tips can help you stay safe and reduce restoration costs while drying out your building. Keep in mind that you may need to make temporary repairs to prevent additional water from entering the building. Along with that, you may want to take a photographic record of the damages caused by the flooding so that you can negotiate costs with your insurance. With these cleaning tips in mind, you can stay on top of the drying process.

If You Are Considering Deep Cleaning in Bradenton, Call Us

Make Door Mats Welcoming Shake, Wash, Swat them with a broom. Give them the toughest cleaning they can take. They’re your front line against tracked-in dirt, so keep them clean enough so they can do the job. Clean Carpets and Upholstery  Fabrics that have absorbed a winter’s worth of dirt, body oil, and germs will need a deep cleaning to get them ready for another year of wear.

Why SERVPRO?

At SERVPRO of West Bradenton /Anna Maria, we have over 26 years of experience cleaning carpets. Our technicians are trained and certified. We make sure we provide them with the best equipment to take of your home. Technology, training and experience set us apart.  Finish Your Floors  To protect the floors in your kitchen from another year of wear and tear, wax or apply a sealer following label directions. The simplest method: Use a combination wash-and-wax floor cleaner. No wax floors don’t need a polishing treatment, but an occasional makeover will keep them looking fresher and add a protective buffer that could help them last longer.  Use a floor cleaner that cleans, shines, or both. If you have wood floors, move furniture and rugs aside, then apply a wood cleaner and either liquid or paste polish to clean and add a new wax coating.  Wash walls, cabinets, baseboards, and woodworkThe walls may not look as if they need to be cleaned, dust and soot fall to the floor, right? Most of it does, but just enough clings to vertical surfaces to warrant a seasonal cleaning. Use a sponge and hand dishwashing detergent, washing the surface in sections. A sponge mop makes it easier to reach higher spots. Use two buckets: one for dishwashing detergent solution and another for wringing your sponge. Dry the walls and woodwork with a clean cloth.  Vacuum with intelligence  The old rules mandated that you go through the labor intensive task of dragging every piece of furniture off the carpet, just so the vacuum cleaner could cover every nook and cranny. Instead, simply move those big items a little to the left or to the right. Vacuum the area previously occupied by the furniture and then move it back into place. Use furniture moving discs to easily move larger pieces of furniture to get to those hard to reach areas.  Clean Your Ceiling Fixtures  Remove dust and dirt from ceiling fans and air-conditioner vents with a cloth and a vacuum with a soft nozzle attachment.  Clean Your Light Fixtures  A few minutes with a stepladder, all purpose cleaner, a sponge, and a polish cloth will give new light to your life. If your home has skylights or tall ceilings, consider investing in a stepladder and extended-reach dust-and-dirt-removal tools.
Clean Your Coils  You should clean the refrigerator’s condenser coil, usually found behind the toe grille, with a long handled bottle brush and a vacuum cleaner with an attachment hose to remove dust and lint. Built up dust can shut down the unit by causing it to overheat. To remove dust from coils attached to the hard-to-reach back side of the fridge, carefully pull the refrigerator out several feet (newer models roll on casters) and vacuum thoroughly. Finish by sweeping or vacuuming the floor area you’ve revealed.    At SERVPRO of West Bradenton /Anna Maria, we love clean! Carpet Cleaning Is About Experience And Technology

6/1/2020 (Permalink)

Although we might not normally associate carpet with improved indoor air quality, it does have a very positive effect. Gravity causes common household particles, such as dust, pollen, pet and insect dander, to fall to the floor. Carpet fibers trap the particles, removing them from the breathing zone and reducing their circulation in the air. Proper cleaning with HEPA filtration vacuums effectively removes dust and allergens from the carpet and helps keep them out of the air we breathe.  Asthma and Allergies  A misconception is that people with asthma and allergies should avoid carpet in the home. Actually, the opposite is true. Studies have shown that properly cleaned carpet helps reduce symptoms and is the best flooring choice for those dealing with asthma and allergies.  Mold and VOC misconceptions:  When carpet is kept clean and dry, mold simply cannot grow on synthetic fibers. Carpet is recognized as one of the lowest emitters of volatile organic compounds (VOC's) among various interior flooring choices.
The U.S. EPA reports that Americans spend nearly 90 percent of their time indoors which means that indoor air quality is of the utmost importance.  Some believe that carpet reduces indoor air quality, but the facts support quite the opposite in that carpet is better for indoor air quality because it acts as a filter by trapping allergens and keeping them out of the breathing zone. In fact, there is no scientific study linking the rise of allergies and asthma to the use of carpet.  If you have carpet in your home, keeping it clean is the best way to eliminate the negative effects of allergens.  Vacuuming is the simplest and most effective way to remove dirt and allergens from carpet. In fact, 90 to 95% of all dry soil by weight can be removed from carpet by following a routine vacuuming schedule. CRI Seal of Approval tests vacuums for effective soil removal and dust containment, which means CRI/SOA-approved vacuums are among the best at raising indoor air quality.  Another imperative in improving indoor air quality is a regular deep cleaning. The past few decades has seen a rapid advancement in the technology and techniques used in the restoration industry. These advancements allow SERVPRO of West Bradenton / Anna Maria Professionals to restore a property back to preloss condition quickly, reliably, and more effectively.  A deep cleaning every 12-18 months by an IICRC trained SERVPRO employee will renew the look of carpet by removing the deepest dirt. The Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) certifies and sets the standards for the cleaning and restoration industries. SERVPRO of West Bradenton / Anna Maria utilizes the best technology and world-renowned certified equipment that effectively removes soil to get carpet looking like new. If you’re committed to improving indoor air quality in your home, choose SERVPRO of West Bradenton / Anna Maria (941) 792-7715.

Preventing Fire Damage To Your Bradenton Home

5/27/2020 (Permalink)

A home that is in flames is shown Every fire damage situation is a little different and requires a unique solution, but the general process stays the same.

Fires in Manatee County occur more frequently than you might actually believe. Proper grill maintenance is often key to preventing a grease fire. Grill cleaning can be an important safety measure, so here are some tips to keep your grill in top shape. 1. Understand Grill Maintenance Basics There are usually several steps to cleaning your grill after use that apply no matter what type of grill you have. First, cook off food debris by heating the grill for 15 minutes. Once cooled, scrub the grates with a long-handled wire brush, though balled up aluminum foil may work in a pinch. Wipe vegetable oil on the grates with paper towels to prevent rust and food accumulation. Finally, clean the inside of the grill with dish soap and warm water. 2. Take Extra Steps, Pre and Post Season Besides grill cleaning after each use, there are a few things you should do each year before you grill for the first time and at the end of the season. One of them is to get a new wire brush each year. Be sure to clean the inside and outside of your grill with dish soap and water and use a grill cover when you store it. 3. Know How To Clean Gas and Charcoal Grills Gas grills have heat deflectors over the burners that should be cleaned with other removable grill parts. The burners can be removed to clean the gas ports. Blocked gas ports can affect the efficiency of your grill.  Charcoal grills are often a bit simpler with regards to cleaning. After each use, remove the briquettes and brush out the ash. Otherwise, clean it with dish soap and warm water like you would clean a gas grill. Grill cleaning should be an essential task to prevent fires. Enjoy your great meals knowing that your grill is clean and safe. If you do experience a fire our professionals are experts at guiding you through the process to restore your home or business.  We take a caring and emphatic approach, treating you, your home or business, and your belongings with respect. Our team will be at your side step-by-step providing knowledge to navigate through any size fire or smoke damage.

Preventing Mold Problems In Your Anna Maria Business

5/26/2020 (Permalink)

When your Bradenton or Anna Maria Island business floods or has water damage, water is everywhere – and so is mold. It is a pervasive pest and infestation that needs water to sprout from fungal spores into a full-on mold outbreak. That may make mold seem like an inevitability, but you have control over the mold in your Bradenton, FL, commercial site, you have options for mold prevention. All you need to do to prevent mold is to prevent water damage. SERVPRO of West Bradenton / Anna Maria is ready to respond immediately and work quickly to clean or restore your business. We understand that your property’s appearance is important and that every hour spent restoring is an hour of lost productivity.

Understanding the Different Types of Water Damage

Water damage in your commercial site can take on many forms, but the most common and most likely to lead to mold growth are the following:  • Leaking roofs and windows, soaking water into insulation, windowsills, drywall, carpet, and other matter within the home
• Damaged or leaking pipes
• Broken or leaking appliances that cause puddling or standing water, or heavy condensation
• Humidity in the air caused by your climate or by showers and steam from the stove
• Flooding and storm damage  Mold prevention involves recognizing these common sources of growth and eliminating them before an infestation can take hold and spread throughout your business.

What If I Already Have Mold?

You can still prevent additional spread of the infestation. Mold remediation and containment can be critical once you’ve discovered mold growth. You may need to shut off your HVAC system to prevent proliferation of mold spores throughout air ducts and do your best to seal off the area where the mold is growing before quickly scrubbing it off. Mold remediation specialists can also help you find the hidden sources of mold and eradicate them.

Once I Get Rid of Mold, Will It Come Back?

After you’ve handled mold cleanup and remediation, proper mold prevention can keep it from coming back – though you can never be rid of it entirely. The spores will always exist in your environment, but the key is keeping them from growing into mold by depriving them of the moisture they need to enter their next stage of development.

This not only includes floors and basements but also awnings and any structures attached to the building.  Personal Policy  Another good flood policy to have is a personal policy that can be used to reimburse you for the actual cash value of items in your building that are damaged. These items include but are not limited to the following examples:  • Furniture and equipment
• Free-standing machinery or appliances
• Uninstalled carpet or rugs
• Inventoried stock
• Non-licensed vehicles used primarily on property  Because your business often relies on the use of these items, a personal policy is just as important for business continuity as a property policy.  Commercial insurance covers damage caused directly by flooding. If a sewage system backs up, for example, the damage it causes is only covered by a flood policy if there is a flood in the area that initiated the backup. Any damage that results from the neglect of property owner, such as subsequent mold or contamination that occurs because the flooding was not dealt with quickly, is also not covered. If handled in a timely manner, however, your property and personal flood policies should make recovering from flooding in Bradenton, FL more affordable.

If You Have Water Damage After A Storm On Anna Maria Island Call The Experts

2/5/2020 (Permalink)

Whether by storm or by burst pipe, you wake up one morning to find that your Anna Maria Island home is flooded with two feet of water. What can you do next? The next step is to call a specialist who can respond to your emergency with the right equipment. The technicians with SERVPRO of West Bradenton / Anna Maria are trained and certified. The Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) certifies and sets the standards for the cleaning and restoration industries. SERVPRO of West Bradenton / Anna Maria have trained (IICRC) technicians.
If a storm has caused water damage don't hesitate call the experts SERVPRO of West Bradenton / Anna Maria (941) 792-7715.
Here is what happens when you use a professional service to help with your flooded basement. 1. Find the SourceThe first thing that any professional is going to do is find the source of your flooding. If you already know where the leak is coming from, you can, of course, point them in the right direction. In some cases, it may be difficult to tell where the leak is coming from on your own. 2. Extract WaterThe next step is to extract the water. Experts will have equipment with them that you may not have access to on your own. For example, some people may have a sump pump in their home, but many don’t. Generally, before they can begin to restore the property, specialists will use a trash pump mounted to their truck to extract the flooding in your basement. 3. Salvage Any MaterialsIf there are any materials that can be salvaged, they will do this for you. Additionally, they will be able to throw out what can’t be saved. This can be anything from drywall, carpets, stuffed animals, bedding and even ceiling tiles. If it’s porous, mold can grow inside the spaces of the object and be impossible to clean. At the end of the day, hiring a professional service to remove water from your basement and to restore your home is less stressful than trying to handle it on your own. Without the proper equipment, you may not get the job done and it could lead to more issues and property damage down the road. A team of experts will make sure everything is quickly and thoroughly taken care of, giving you your home back as soon as possible. Knowing What To Do After The Storm

1/10/2020 (Permalink)

A damaged roof is shown with wind damage on the corner of a house SERVPRO of West Bradenton / Anna Maria (941) 792-7715 There are a number of steps you can take to protect your property from damaging winds.

Homeowners concerns arise with the possibility of severe storms, with damaging winds being high on the list. These winds, which can come with little to no notice, can create long-term structural impacts.

What to be Concerned About

Tornadoes and hurricanes are not the only storms to cause damaging winds. “Straight-line” winds with wind speeds exceeding 50–60 mph are often spawned by strong or severe thunderstorm—and their damage is different than damage from a tornado.

The damage from these winds can be very destructive, causing loose items around your home to become projectiles. Windows and roofs can take a major brunt of this damage, and if the damage is extensive, it can result in water damage to the inside of the home as the outside elements come indoors.

Anyone who lives in a thunderstorm-prone area can be at risk from damaging winds, but there are some structures, like mobile homes, that are especially at risk. Even when anchored, they could be seriously damaged in wind gusts over 80 mph.

How to Protect Your Property

There are a number of steps you can take to protect your property from damaging winds, but keep the “Two R’s” in mind: reinforce and remove.

  • Have your garage door professionally reinforced.

  • Remove and/or anchor loose objects on your property that could be blown or tossed by the wind, including trash cans, grills and outdoor furniture.

  • Have large or dying trees and branches near your home professionally removed. Better to remove them now than have them come crashing down during a storm.

Not all high wind circumstances come with advanced warning, as we all know, but using a “just-in-case” logic and being prepared could prevent major damage to your home.

Also, if you are building or renovating a home, be sure all windows, walls and doors meet building code for your area.

If you have questions please call SERVPRO of West Bradenton / Anna Maria (941) 792-7715

Florida State Fire Marshalls Provides Tips To Avoid House Fires This Winter

1/7/2020 (Permalink)

According to the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA), heating is the second leading cause of U.S. home fires, deaths and injuries and December, January and February are the peak months for heating fires.

Here are some helpful tips from the Florida State Fire Marshall:

1. Keep objects away from heaters and fireplaces. Keep flammable objects at least three-feet away from heating equipment, like the furnace, fireplace, wood stove, or portable space heater. Have a three-foot “kid-free zone” around open fires and space heaters.

2. Keep fireplaces and chimneys clean. Have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional.

3. Never leave a fire unattended. Remember to extinguish fireplaces and turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.

4. Do not use your oven to heat your home. Have a qualified professional install stationary space heating equipment, water heaters or central heating equipment according to your local codes and manufacturer’s instructions.

5. Use Carbon Monoxide detectors. Since carbon monoxide can be produced by a number of fuel-burning devices, it's important to have carbon monoxide alarms on every level of your home. This will ensure every person in the home can hear and be alerted to the emergency.

If you do experience a fire know that SERVPRO of West Bradenton / Anna Maria can help you with your insurance company.

We work with your insurance.

Document the Damages
List all of the damages that you have incurred both structural and personal. Make sure you take photos of the damages, the date it occurred, type of loss and a written report if possible. Document any injuries and make sure you get the police report. When taking photos, it is best to include a general photo as well as close-up photos of specific damages.

Keep Receipts and Bills
The insurance company needs evidence to understand what to pay. If you have performed any minor repairs, keep the receipts so that the insurance company understands the original damages.

Keep the Evidence Intact
The adjustor uses the site of the accident to determine your compensation. So, don’t throw away any damaged items before the insurance adjustor has been at the site.

Sewage Is Not An Easy Clean-Up Call The Trained Pros

1/7/2020 (Permalink)

A toilet is shown in a bathroom SERVPRO of West Bradenton / Anna Maria is locally owned and operated, so we are part of this community too.

Sewage is one of the most dangerous substances to enter homes or buildings. It contains harmful bacteria and can lead to serious health issues or even death. Unfortunately, many people fail to understand the hazards that sewage presents, particularly for the very young or very old, or for those with compromised immune systems or respiratory problems.  Keep SERVPRO of West Bradenton / Anna Maria in mind when dealing with these situations.  We are on call to serve you 24/7 at (941) 792-7715.
Here are the key principles homeowners should know about sewage back-ups: Sewage contains a variety of pathogenic – disease causing – bacteria and parasites. Anyone who works on sewage losses must have updated vaccinations, including one for Hepatitis B. Sewage exposure is particularly dangerous for people with weakened immune systems, including anyone under two or over 60, those who are pregnant, ill, recovering from surgery, on prescription drugs or chemotherapy, or are AIDS victims. It is not safe to stay in a building that’s flooded with sewage unless the contaminated area can be completely sealed off and placed under controlled air flow so that there will be no cross contamination of unaffected areas. Highly absorbent sewage-saturated materials, such as carpet, pad, upholstery, bedding, wicker, paper or even fabrics that can’t be washed in hot water (130°F/54°C) for at least 10 minutes, must be contained and disposed of properly. This goes for sewage-saturated drywall, insulation and several other structural materials too. There’s simply too great a health risk involved if any of these materials are dried in place and cleaned only. Only the most highly trained professionals should provide sewage remediation work. The technicians with SERVPRO of West Bradenton / Anna Maria are trained and certified to handle these situations. Bottom line is if you ever experience a sewage backup, don’t assume you can clean the mess with bleach and a mop. Call in a professional who is well trained and has many years of experience dealing with sewage disasters. Call a pro – call SERVPRO of West Bradenton / Anna Maria (941) 792-7715.

The Facts About Water Damage and Mold

1/6/2020 (Permalink)

A room that has extensive mold on the walls is shown Highly trained specialists are ready to respond quickly to your water damage emergency. SERVPRO of West Bradenton / Anna Maria (941) 792-7715

Water damage can be a costly mess and it can encourage the growth of mold on walls and floors. It may even be in areas that are not visible, in ductwork, attics and crawl spaces.  In these hidden areas you might not notice it. A musty odor is a sign that mold may be present. Mold can cause damage and lead to health problems, so it's important to deal with it quickly.

How do I identify a mold problem?

Check the air and surfaces in the area. If you notice a musty smell, then you have a mold problem. Additionally, different types of mold discolor surfaces with black and/or green specks. Look for mold in bathrooms, windows, crawl spaces, air conditioners, ventilation systems, leaky roofs, attics and basements. Why have I found mold in several areas?

All fungi, like mold, release spores that travel along air currents. Unless a mold-infested area is sealed off, the spores spread throughout a building.

Why does mold grow in air ducts?
Poor duct maintenance and moisture from humidity or plumbing, wall or roof leaks give mold spores the perfect dark habitat for growth. The experienced team at SERVPRO of West Bradenton / Anna Maria use the IICRC (gold standard) guidelines to remove any mold growth.

Can I use bleach to remove mold? Mold spores have roots.  Liquid bleach is the wrong choice for several reasons: Bleach can't successfully penetrate all surfaces -- especially some porous materials -- and since it is wet it will help any missed mold regrow.

Worse yet, bleach can hide a deeply rooted mold problem.  Do I need additional testing if I already know that I have mold in my home after water damage?
Testing determines the type of mold and the amount of cleaning that must be done to completely restore an area.

Should I use a DIY test kit after water damage?
Although DIY kits are inexpensive, they often provide false positive results. They also don't offer the data needed to determine the type of mold or the amount of spores in the air. Also, you need a CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist) to interpret the results and they can not be responsible for determining samples that may not have been collect properly. How can I remove mold growth and spores from my home?

The best way is to bring in the trained technicians of SERVPRO of West Bradenton / Anna Maria. They can evaluate the problem and perform the correct tasks to remove mold from the air and surfaces, clean the infested area and safeguard against future growth.

It's important to understand the damage water can do.

Confusion and misunderstanding surround the topic of mold and mold remediation. Some restoration businesses even make claims to remove all mold from a building. This is a fallacy. Mold spores occur naturally almost everywhere, both indoors and outdoors. These microscopic spores float along in the air and can enter a home or business through windows and HVAC systems.

Consider these facts: Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
They are always present and only dangerous when reactivated by a high level of moisture.
Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.

Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.

Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed/stopped. Otherwise, the mold may return.

Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If Your Home or Business is Damaged By Water Do You Understand Your Coverage?

12/31/2019 (Permalink)

Two SERVPRO Technicians are shown cleaning up water damage If an insurance company declines your application to cover water damage, it could still have a big impact on your insurance rates. (941) 792-7715

After experiencing water damage, you may be left wondering what your options are. In most cases, you should make sure that you fix all water damage as quickly as possible. Once you have done this, you can then proceed to file for claims. Fixing your home immediately can prevent problems from getting worse due to mold or decomposition. However, afterward you will still need to deal with the consequences of the bills. For some homeowners, it may be possible for insurance to cover some of the losses. Many homeowners insurance policies do not always come packaged with flood insurance. To provide assistance, this will take a look at the differences between flood insurance and water damage claims. Water Damage Claims
Your first impulse is probably to call your insurance company. Hopefully, you haven’t done this yet. There is a big difference between water damage and flood insurance. Water damage can be caused by storms, accidents, or bursting pipes. These claims are only valid when water damage is associated with water that did not first touch the ground (such as lakes, ponds, & rivers). This means that water coming from a regular thunderstorm or tornado, plumbing, or appliance is usually covered under water damage claims. In contrast, a flooded lake or stream that inundates a person’s home is not covered.  Flood Insurance
It is important to keep in mind that flood insurance is a special form of insurance contract. It does not automatically come with a standard homeowners insurance policy. In almost all cases, individuals have to purchase   flood insurance separately from homeowners insurance. Since many homeowners are not aware of this, homeowners are often outraged when they discover that their insurance contract does not cover flood damage. Flood insurance is generally available for just a few dollars each month. Without this insurance, homeowners can not expect to have any damage associated with flooding covered under their homeowners insurance policy.  Implications of Denied Coverage
If an insurance company declines your application to cover water damage, it could still have a big impact on your monthly insurance rates. Insurance companies can take advantage of information in your claims application to increase your monthly insurance bills. It is not uncommon to see insurance companies viewing homes that have experienced flood damage as high risk. As a result, they have the right to appropriately increase your monthly rates according to this information. The reality that your insurance rates could increase after being denied coverage makes it even more important to understand the difference between flood damage and water damage claims. Many individual homeowners make the mistake of filing claims for costs associated with flood damage, only to find that these costs are not covered. When the bill comes the next month, there is nothing that homeowners can do to bring their rates back down. Therefore, it is important to only file a claim if flood damage is explicitly covered in the homeowners insurance contract. In some cases, it may even be recommended for homeowners to work with an attorney to ensure that it is appropriate to file a water damage claim.
SERVPRO of West Bradenton / Anna Maria provides emergency cleaning and restoration services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week—including all holidays. You can expect an immediate response time, day or night.

If Water Has Been Flowing, Mold Could Be Growing

6/30/2019 (Permalink)

An important distinction between restoration companies is certification. SERVPRO® of West Bradenton / Anna Maria is an IICRC firm.

Mold can be a serious threat to your home or business. It requires immediate, professional attention.
The first pointer you want to keep in mind involves mold growth and its ability to spread quickly. Whether your business has had a leaky pipe or a more serious form of moisture damage, mold usually moves in within 24 to 48 hours after the water runs its course. Because they can easily lock dampness in, carpets are especially susceptible to rapid mold invasion. Plan To Dry Properly
Cleaning up after water damage in your building can require more than a couple of hours with a scrub brush; instead, the professionals may need to make a further inspection. Call SERVPRO® West Bradenton / Anna Maria  (941) 792-7715. Areas such as baseboards and spaces behind walls are mold's favorite stomping grounds, but they're also often hard to fully scrutinize. Other places prone to mold takeover include tile ceilings, spots behind wallpaper, and any other place that can trap moisture.
Keep Up With Routine Maintenance
Anti-mold steps don't usually end after a cleanup is over. Mold has a way of popping up after any minor water damage and can even linger in a humid part of the building. It's also capable of sustaining itself on drier materials until moisture comes back into the picture, so you want to carry out regular maintenance checks to ensure the fungus stays outside where it belongs.
Regardless of the weather in Bradenton, FL or what type of moisture chaos you may be facing, your business could be hiding an unpleasant, moldy secret that could take a toll on the building itself. Keep these mold prevention tips in mind to avoid any surprises down the road.
Restoration Companies are usually the ?rst to your home or business following signi?cant damage to a home from ?oods and ?res, water damage, sewage backup and other major events.  The job of a restoration company is to clean up the mess and to preserve and protect the home and its contents so that further damage will not occur.
An important distinction between restoration companies is certification.
SERVPRO® of West Bradenton / Anna Maria is an IICRC firm. The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) creates the standards for the restoration industry and provides training and certification to restoration companies. IICRC Certified Firms have the right to display the IICRC Certified Logo.
IICRC Certified Firms must
• Present accurate information to consumers and conduct business with honesty and integrity.
• Require a technician on all jobs who has been formally trained and passed all required tests.
• Require a continuing education program to keep technicians up-to-date on the latest changes in the industry.
• Maintain liability insurance to protect all parties in the event of an accident.
• Maintain a written complaint policy and agree to Better Business Bureau or similar arbitration to resolve disputes, and accept the conclusions and recommendations of arbitration.
The IICRC Develops The Standards For The Restoration Industry
The IICRC has been the driving force in establishing the main industry standards and reference guides for professional carpet cleaning, water damage restoration and mold remediation. These IICRC standards take years to develop and require the coordination of experts in the field: manufacturers, industry organizations, insurance professionals, training schools, contractors, and public health professionals.
Every five years, the standards are reviewed and updated. The water damage restoration field changes rapidly with advancements in technology and science, and therefore the standards must evolve to keep pace. Call SERVPRO® West Bradenton / Anna Maria  (941) 792-7715 for more information on mold.

Even Small Fires Can Cause Significant Smoke Damage

6/19/2019 (Permalink)

Smoke Damage From a Kitchen Fire in Bradenton

The smoke that lingers after a fire has been put out can be more damaging than you might think. The problem that many homeowners have is that they don’t think a fire or smoke damage could ever happen to them. The reality is that home fires are incredibly common, ranging from the very minor to the more major. Despite the fact that a minor fire may not cause a lot of fire damage, it can still cause significant smoke damage that is difficult to clean and dangerous to be living around.

Smoke Damage that is a direct result of fire damage should ideally be cleaned by experts. Experts know how to get rid of smoke damage that might be present in the home after it has been ravished by flames. You should always look to hire a licensed and highly experienced professional who has extensive experience dealing with fire damage. The professionals will often start by evaluating the overall extent of the damage that is present in the home, and then they will go over prices and costs of damage remediation for you to get the issue cleaned up by their company.

There are a lot of reasons why handling smoke damage after a fire should be done by experts and as quickly as possible. The smoke that you find after a fire often contains ash, soot and sometimes even carbons and tar that might have come off of the flames. Also, carbon monoxide is incredibly common after fire damage has been exhibited. Carbon monoxide is very dangerous  because it is odorless and cannot be seen or tasted. Therefore, you may not even know that you are surrounded by carbon monoxide until it has been properly tested. An expert damage restoration company like SERVPRO will normally test for carbon monoxide levels in a home that has dealt with a fire.

Smoke damage can also be aesthetically damaging. Furniture, walls, ceilings and practically anything in your home can become black or gray from the smoke that has come off from a fire. Many things will need to be professionally cleaned, while other things might have to be fully removed from the home in order to get rid of the problem. Your remediation company will be the one who tells you what can and cannot be saved after you have dealt with massive smoke damage in your own home.

Fires are very common, and even the most minor fire can cause a lot of smoke damage. In fact, some homeowners who have simple fireplaces that are not well-vented could deal with smoke damage without a fire ever being an issue for the home itself. Handling the damage on your own should be avoided simply because of all of the expertise that needs to go into cleaning the mess. Also, you need to have a professional test the home or room for carbon monoxide to ensure that it is going to be safe for you or for them to go in there to clean.

Smoke after a fire can linger for a long time. SERVPRO of West Bradenton / Anna Maria has the resources and training to make your damage, "Like it never even happened." Call us today, 941-792-7715.

Why Emergency Preparation Is Essential for Businesses | SERVPRO® of West Bradenton/Anna Maria Island

5/9/2019 (Permalink)

Having a disaster plan will save your business.

There are so many different things that must be taken into consideration when running a business, but one of the most important factors to consider is emergency preparedness.

Wouldn’t it be a great if having an emergency preparedness plan would be all you need to protect your company from disasters? Unfortunately, that is not the case, but having a plan can still give your business an advantage on the safety side and ensure that your employees are aware of what is expected of them and what to do if a disaster or emergency situation should occur.

Making a Plan

Why not make it a point to take the time to sit down and work out an emergency preparedness plan for various disaster situations? In fact, make it a priority!

There are numerous emergencies your business should have a preparedness plan in place for, including:

  • Fire
  • Severe weather, including thunderstorms and winter storms
  • Other natural hazards like floods, hurricanes, tornadoes and earthquakes
  • Human-caused hazards, including accidents or acts of violence
  • Technology-related issues like power outages and equipment failure

It doesn’t matter if it’s a man-made incident or one stemming from nature, if there is no emergency plan for your business, the situation could get even more stressful quickly.

Make safety training and familiarization of emergency preparedness plans topics that are included in your company onboarding process, team-building activities and continuing education opportunities. By helping employees familiarize themselves with proper safety protocol and emergency procedures, you’re not only giving them the tools to protect themselves, but you are also setting them up to help protect guests/visitors and the business itself.

Where to Start

As a first step when beginning to set up an emergency plan for your business, evaluate which scenarios would most likely to occur—but also include even those that are long shots but could still happen. It’s better to prepare for anything that could possibly happen and not be caught off guard.

There are plenty of online resources to help guide you through this process, including Ready.gov, the American Red Cross, FEMA and the CDC.

You should also look into a business impact analysis (BIA) to help predict the potential effect a disaster may have on your business. This should include lost or delayed sales and income, increased expenses from repairs, and delayed implementation of business plans. Also, don’t forget to make sure a crisis communications plan is in place, too.

Be sure to review and practice your emergency preparedness plan on a regular basis with your employees once you have one in place. Reviewing and rehearsing various scenarios can help ensure the process remains fresh in their minds and can help employees feel more empowered.

Disaster can strike when you least expect it, but by being prepared and having a plan in place, your business will be better suited to handle whatever Mother Nature has in store. If the worst should happen and your business is damaged, know that SERVPRO® of West Bradenton/Anna Maria Island is here to help make it “Like it never even happened.”

Facts You Need to Know About Mold Remediation | SERVPRO® of West Bradenton/Anna Maria Island

1/10/2019 (Permalink)

If you are facing a water damage situation in your home or commercial property, mold growth is likely occurring. In fact, mold can begin growing within 48 hours of exposure to moisture.

Knowing the steps to take in this situation is vital, which is why we’re using this blog to provide you with an overview of what exactly mold remediation is.

Do You Understand Mold Remediation?

It is very likely that you’ve seen ads for mold remediation with the promise of mold removal, but the latter of the two is not true. To remove all mold from a home or business is simply impossible. A qualified restoration company focuses on mold remediation, further setting the goal of lowering mold levels back to a normal and safe level.

Mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both inside and outdoors. However, they only become an issue when a minor problem is ignored, allowing it to become major mold infestation.

In a mold remediation situation, technicians isolate all of the contaminated areas. Depending on the level of remediation, it will be done by either closing all doors and windows or sealing off all doorways and openings completely with a polyethylene sheeting. Dust in the contaminated areas is suppressed through misting process.

All of the wet and mold-damaged materials will be removed and discarded using plastic bags. The technicians will then ensure that all areas exposed to and affected by the mold are thoroughly cleaned and dried. A HEPA vacuum may be used in some cases to help with the removal of contamination and debris.

A biocide is used to treat the mold-affected area and then left overnight to destroy and kill the mold spores. The following day, the mold remediation crew will return to encapsulate the affected area and beyond.

It’s Best to Call the Professionals

If there is a chance your home or business may have a mold problem, you’ll want to act quickly. Upon evaluating the size of the problem, you should call a professional mold remediation company if the mold-affected area is more than 10 square feet.

Be sure that the professionals you call are highly trained and certified in areas like:

  • Applied microbial remediation
  • Water damage restoration
  • Applied structural drying

While some homeowners and business owners have successfully resolved minor mold issues on their own, the best way to handle mold is to contact the professionals for the quick and safe resolution to the problem.

At SERVPRO® of West Bradenton/Anna Maria Island, our mold damage specialists are trained and certified experts in mold remediation. If your home or business is experiencing a mold issue, contact us to begin the mold remediation process.

Fire Safety Basics for Your Home | SERVPRO® of West Bradenton/Anna Maria Island

1/10/2019 (Permalink)

Did you know that every year in the United States, more than 350,000 house fires occur, adding up to more than $5.5 billion in property damage? Aside from the financial loss, there’s also an immense human expense—these fires lead to close to 3,000 deaths and another 10,000 injuries.

Your best defense against a fire is advance preparation. It’s important that each member of your household know how to prevent fires and what actions to take if one should occur.

Start by teaching your kids basic fire safety guidelines at a young age. Let’s also consider these three other fire safety precautions you can practice together:

Establish a Family Fire Safety Plan

If there is a fire, each person in the family must to know how to react and stay calm—including how to safely get out of the house and where to go once they’re out.

However, creating a plan is just the beginning.

We’ve all heard the saying, “practice makes perfect.” Regular practice of your routine will make you more likely to remember the steps if a fire breaks out.

Pick Out Fire Hazards

How many fire hazards would you spot if you were to look through your home? You might be surprised what you’d find! Take time to go through every room and your outdoor space to uncover these hazards.

  • Are your appliances in good working condition?
  • Are your electrical cords intact and not frayed or otherwise damaged?
  • Have you overloaded your outlets and/or extension cords?
  • Are you using the correct wattage of light bulbs in light fixtures?
  • Have you checked to ensure that electrical wiring is not covered up by rugs or carpet?
Cooking Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen

Cooking is the biggest single cause of house fires. That’s why it’s important to be especially mindful in the kitchen.

Anyone who’s cooking can use a refresher on basic cooking safety. For example:

  • Cooking when tired or otherwise unable to pay attention is not advised.
  • It is advisable to always supervise kids and teens when they are cooking.
  • Have a lid available when cooking on the stove. If a small grease fire occurs, you will be able to cover and smother the fire with the lid.
  • If the oven catches on fire, turn off the oven and keep the oven door closed.

If a kitchen fire spreads, leave the room immediately and close the door behind you.

If your family has experienced a fire and needs help restoring your home, SERVPRO® of West Bradenton/Anna Maria Island can help! Give us a call to learn about our fire restoration services and what we can do for you.

Bradenton Residents: Bleach does not kill mold!

6/11/2018 (Permalink)

Does bleach kill mold? Read more about killing mold in Bradenton.

Recently we received a call from a Property Manager in Bradenton because they noticed some mold growing on the baseboard in one of the bathrooms and they wanted to know if bleach would kill the mold pores. Unfortunately, I had to give him the bad news that bleach will not kill mold spores.

Then I followed by explaining that the idea that bleach kills mold spores is one of those “urban myths” that has made its way into the do-it-yourself community, leading homeowners and property managers to believe that they can actually kill a mold problem by spraying a bleach solution onto a wall and then wiping it clean. But while the area appears to be clean and rid of the black fungus on the surface, this particular method actually makes the situation worse.

When mold and bleach interact, the mold spores react as if they are being attacked. Spraying the fungus down with bleach causes the mold to shoot off spores to protect itself. So, as you are wiping the surface, you are actually spreading the mold spores further out.  If the cloth is used in other areas of the home, it can spread the mold to areas that were unaffected (otherwise known as cross contamination).

In Bradenton, Disasters Do Not Come Just From Storms

6/11/2018 (Permalink)

Disasters can occur anywhere at anytime. Are you prepared? At SERVPRO, we are ready for whatever happens.

We participated in the Manatee County Disaster Preparedness Expo. There were three speakers talking about their experiences with hurricanes in Florida and around the Gulf Region.  One of the points the speakers mentioned over and over again is that we have not had a named storm hit Florida in 12 years. This doesn’t seem right, but it is true! I would encourage you not to be apathetic and to treat each hurricane season seriously and listen to what your preferred meteorologist has to say.

The theme of the Expo was Business Recovery. Their data states that 40% of businesses do not recover from a disaster. This is a very high number and the major cause is lack of business insurance or being under-insured. Hurricane or no hurricane this year, disasters are not just large storms. Here’s a list of potential “disasters” that can ruin a business or cause disruption to your operations:

  • Large thunderstorm with damaging winds and rain
  • Sewage backup
  • Plumbing leaks
  • Fire Sprinkler Activation
  • Vandalism
  • Fire and smoke damage

Do you know what to do if one the above should occur in your business? Does your insurance cover all of the above perils? Do you have a business interruption policy to cover your loss of income in the event of a disaster? I encourage you to sit down with your agent and ask these questions. A good policy should be designed to protect your financial interests.

At SERVPRO of West Bradenton / Anna Maria, we are here to help in the event of a disaster. Our trained staff will respond quickly and professionally to your emergency needs. We will work with your insurance adjuster to restore your business and make it "Like it never even happened." We are available 24/7/365.

Disasters cause more than a mess in Bradenton

4/4/2016 (Permalink)

At SERVPRO of Bradenton, we clean up disasters of types: Hoarding & Biohazard. 941-747-2333

In Bradenton, SERVPRO is usually the first company on the scene for property damage. When someone experiences damage to their home, there is an emotional part that comes into play and I can’t help but to be affected and even become emotionally involved as well – we care for each and every one of our clients. As a result, there are some jobs that stay with me for a long time.  I remember the people I served and think about them from time to time, and hope that in whatever way I could, I made some kind of an impact on their lives.

The other day, I happened to think about a customer I met a few months ago. We received a call from the property manager of a 55 and older community. One of the residents living there had died and the manager wanted us to come in and clean up the unit. The deceased’s husband was living in a nursing home and their daughter was flying in from Ohio.

We immediately went to the job and began work. The home was a disaster not only were we dealing with a biohazard after a death, the woman in the home became “stuck” in the stress of life and stopped taking care of the house and herself – we were also dealing with a hoarding case.

When her daughter arrived, I could see the pain on her face and knew that she was completely overwhelmed by everything that she had to address. She had to tell her dad about her mother’s death, she had to make funeral arrangements, and she had to grieve. She assumed that she would have to pay for our services out of her mother’s estate. I explained to her that the job in part was most likely covered by her mother’s homeowner’s insurance but I could also see that calling the insurance agent was the last thing on her mind. I couldn’t minimize her emotional pain but I could step in and help a bit with handling the logistics of this clean up. And so I did. I told her to focus on taking care of her dad and making the arrangements for the funeral and I would handle everything concerning the clean up and insurance. I contacted the agent who filed the claim for damages and I went back to the unit later to meet with the adjuster.

Some would say I went the “extra mile” to help this customer, but I disagree. This woman had just suffered the worst loss imaginable. I consider what I did to be a part of the human condition—to reach out and help a person in a time of need. I often think of this customer and hope that she is doing well, that she passed the nursing exams she was studying for when her mother died. Most of all I hope that, in some small way, I helped to ease her burden during a very difficult time.
